Dear Neighbors, Parents, Fireman, Police Officers, Hospital Staff, School officials, Home Owners, and Home Owner Association Board Members of Chesterfield, Virginia
You may have heard about the rollout of the next generation in wireless technology, known as the “5G rollout." This rollout will bring to our community several issues important to every family: safety, security, privacy, property values and health, and we are reaching out to you before the installation begins everywhere so you can make your feelings known to our local officials.
The placement of powerful wireless antennas throughout our neighborhoods is a significant security and privacy issue. Those who have “smart homes”, this increases the possibility that our activities will be monitored, and even more data will be collected and marketed. From a damage-control standpoint most utility poles were not designed to withstand the addition of hundreds of pounds of additional equipment, and severe weather events could cause damage to our homes and property.
Perhaps most troubling, many government leaders, scientists and medical researchers are raising questions about the long-term health impacts of exposure to the radiation from these antennas. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) safety exposure guidelines for radiation from these antennas have not been updated in more than 20 years, and recent peer-reviewed, independent studies have confirmed what previous studies have shown: chronic low-level exposure to wireless radiation can cause serious health problems including cancer.

National awareness of these issues may also trigger declines in property value for homeowners whose property is located in close proximity to these new antennas. While we all want to be connected, no one wants to live in a home with a potential health threat in the front yard.
Our town has signed a contract for the deployment of 5G wireless antennas, and we believe we should make our feelings known to the local officials before more construction begins and formal decisions are made. Several towns have just said "No."

* Please note when we say Stop 5G we do not mean the upgraded 4G service which TMobile calls 5G for marketing purposes. We mean the 5G infrastructure with 5G millimeter waves which is designed to be an "Internet of Things. "The telecom companies intend for your phone to be able to "talk" to your refrigerator, car, and store when you shop. Constant surveillance of citizens will also be possible. Because the 5G millimeter waves reach a shorter distance, they require 4/5G facilities every 500 feet in a city (or closer- on every lamp post) and 12-25 feet from your home.
Dear Chesterfield County/Richmond Mayor Stoney, Chesterfield City Council Members and City Officials of Chesterfield, Virginia
We, the residents of Chesterfield County urge you to seek a tolling agreement, or moratorium to halt further deployment of 5G Telecommunication Facilities (large and small) until the lawsuits against the FCC are settled.
We all live here and work/own businesses here because you and many before you have worked very hard to keep our city safe and beautiful.
We understand that Verizon and other telecommunication companies intend to install more "small" cell towers across our city. Together with other carriers 4G wireless facilities are intended to transition to 5G. These “small” cells and poles could be placed every few hundred feet on our sidewalks and right in front of our homes and schools!
We understand that these unsightly poles will likely lower property values of home 20-30% and could impact the appeal of doing business in Chesterfield County.
You know that these "small" cells will be based on 4G technology placed much closer to residents than necessary. Their signals are powerful, and can travel thousands of feet. This extreme and constant exposure to high levels of RF, even below the FCC exposure limits, will have many detrimental effects to the safety and well-being of our families, neighbors, pets, wildlife, pollinators, and business owners.
Additionally, we understand that the International Firefighters Association has called for a moratorium on all wireless telecom facilities on their premises, where they sleep and work. This is due to health impacts that the firefighters experienced- headaches, confusion and cognitive impairment - when a wireless facility was installed on their premises.
Why then would we ever approve any cell structure near a home or in our city? Particularly sensitive are the elderly, children, babies in utero and those with health conditions such as EMF sensitivity which is an ADA recognized disability.
We deserve the same exemptions and safety precautions!
We also want to keep our city beautiful!
We urge you to exercise your authority to regulate the aesthetics of wireless telecommunications facilities that includes and to regulate the Operation of the facilities, including no operation within residential zoning. In many of our residential locations our utilities are mostly under- ground already.
This is a paramount public safety issue. Since the local ordinance requires a “planned Development permit”, we ask that the Planning Commission requires the applicant to show why their equipment should not be underground like all other utilities?
There have been two lawsuits filed against the FCC for failing to update their guidelines to include 4, 5 G and health, safety and environmental standards.
We urge you to seek a tolling agreement, or moratorium to halt further deployment until the lawsuits against the FCC are settled.
Please say NO to more 4/5G facilities in Chesterfield, Virginia. There are many other alternatives such as wired fiber networks which are safer, more secure, more energy efficient and do not present the same harms to our health and environment as wireless facilities.
We understand that our city risks a lawsuit by Verizon or other telecom companies...but we think the risk of a lawsuit (and welcome discovery process which opens up their can of worms) is far less costly to us than risking our communities' collective health, the value of our beautiful city, and the safety we cherish in Chesterfield, VA.
