For many years, I have lived in an apartment complex that enforces BSL otherwise known as "breed-specific legislation". In 2012, the state of Ohio repealed the bans against breed specific restrictions. (Ohio Revised Code 955.11) At a federal level, according to a statement released by President Obama, the White House does not support "breed-specific legislation" and finds it to be ineffective and a waste of public resources.

The CDC says the BSL is inappropriate based on studies of the number of dog bites in the year 2000 stating "..looked at twenty years of data about dog bites and human fatalities in the United States. They found that fatal attacks represent a very small proportion of dog bite injuries to people and that it's virtually impossible to calculate bite rates for specific breeds....and the simple fact is that dogs of any breed can become dangerous when they're intentionally or unintentionally raised to be aggressive."

The CDC goes on to say "For all of those reasons, the CDC officially recommends against breed-specific legislation--which they call inappropriate. As an alternative to breed specific policies, the CDC recommends a community-based approach to prevent dog bites. And ultimately, we think that's a much more promising way to build stronger communities of pets and pet owners." (Huffpost.com)

We, the undersigned, demand that "breed-specific legislation" be removed from residential properties. It is unfair and down right ignorant. To target specific breeds as "dangerous" or "vicious" is virtually the same as racial profiling a human. There is no place for that kind of ignorance.

Each individual dog has it's own personality and temperament, same as a human. If we allow this kind of restriction against animals it's as if we are allowing racism to live. There is no difference. Not allowing an animal or a pet owner to live in a specific residential neighborhood or community because of the breed of dog they are or own is discriminatory and unlawful.

Any dog breed can be labeled as "dangerous" or "vicious", if it is raised to be aggressive or is in an unsafe, violent environment it will then become as such. But to say that pitbull-type dogs, German shepherds, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Chow Chows, Mastiffs, and so on are "aggressive" breeds is inaccurate.

Please take this petition as a serious action against BSL and what it stands for.

Do not support animal racism or prejudice.
