McKean Street is a busy street in Caboolture which has three Schools, six Daycare centres, a Hospital, Community Health Centre, TAFE and a Train Station surrounding it. With all of these community venues we need to make sure that our children, residents and pedestrian workers are safe at all times.

At present we only have one permanent crossing which is the traffic lights at the intersection of McKean and Manly Streets. This is not enough considering the amount of children and residents that walk and ride around these areas. We do have 3 existing crossings surrounding the area, but these are only active during short periods before and after school.

We need something more permanent for those people who wish to cross the road when they are not available.

We, the undersigned, call on the Moreton Bay Regional Council and Main Roads Queensland ... TO PLACE A PERMANENT ZEBRA CROSSING AT THE EXISTING SCHOOL HOURS ONLY PEDESTRIAN CROSSING ON McKEAN STREET, CABOOLTURE
as well as
REDUCE THE EXISTING SPEED TO 50km/hr WITH 40km/hr ZONES FOR SCHOOL HOURS on McKEAN STREET, CABOOLTURE.

That is why we are requesting that the McKean pedestrian crossing be made into a permanent zebra crossing so children and adults can cross at all times of the day. At present people still cross there but because the speed limit is at 60km/hr we are finding more and more people running across the road just to get across. How is this safe?

McKean Street is a long stretch of road that has the speed limit of 60km/hr at all times. Children run across the road, ducking between cars because they have no other way of getting across. Being a growing area with more residents and children around we feel the speed needs to be reduced to 50km/hr as it is becoming a very busy residential area, with 40km/hr zone before and after school. Not only for the safety of our children but also for the safety of our Road Safety Officers.

Our Road Safety Officers are there to help our children cross busy roads before and after school but people are not seeing them, driving to fast or driving straight through them with children crossing the road. More the reason to reduce the speed to 40km/hr during school hours before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.

Do you agree that these necessary actions need to be put in place?
