Please Help Protect Spallumcheen Families from Toxic Soot.

The very large growing soot pile behind Tolko's Plywood Plant has got to go! Every time the wind picks up it is carrying little black bits into our homes. There is a layer of black soot everywhere, and it's causing all sorts of problems.

These tiny particles damage our lungs, they irritate our eyes, nose and throat and cause coughing. It is harmful to adults, the elderly, and especially our children. Inside our homes, the black dust settles on our floors, in the window sills, and on our furniture, which makes cleaning almost impossible. Outside, our clean clothes on the line are covered in soot. Plants, vegetables and flowers are covered in soot too, almost daily. This makes cleaning our clothes, maintaining our homes, and growing our food quite challenging. The result of this soot has decreased the value our health and the value of our homes.

If you have been impacted by air pollution, experienced trouble breathing, or you just want to help us be heard, please sign my petition. By urging Tolko to remove the soot pile we are creating a healthier environment for us and our children. We all deserve clean air and pollutant free homes. Let's fight together to help protect the families of Spallumcheen!

Here are three more reasons to sign our petition today:

1. Soot is tiny. Soot is made up of particles that are smaller than a speck of dust, and less than 1/30th the width of a human hair. Their small size means that they are especially harmful. They penetrate deeply into the lungs, and can’t be expelled through coughing. They also easily enter the bloodstream.

2. Soot harms babies and children. Exposure is linked to increases in infant mortality, premature birth, and low birth weight. It also exacerbates asthma in children and interferes with lung development.

3. Our Bodies, Our Economy. Among adults, soot exposure has been linked to premature death, heart attacks, emergency room visits, acute bronchitis, asthma attacks, and cancer.
