Target:
Hon. Brent Symonette, Attorney General
Region:
Bahamas

On July 9, 2009, 100 days after his 18th Birthday, Brenton Hector Smith was shot and killed by an officer of the Royal Bahamas Police Force. He was an unarmed citizen walking through a neighborhood in view of witnesses when he was killed.

The police have stated that they have turned over the details of their investigation to the Coroner's Court. However, there has not been a date set for the Coroner's Inquest into Brenton's death. The Coroner's Inquest will provide the facts and details surrounding Brenton's death.

We recognize that there are outstanding cases before the Attorney General's Office. However, given the fact that Brenton was shot by a police officer, without having posed a threat to the officer, and given the state of crime on New Providence and the necessity to maintain public confidence in the RBPF, we are asking AG Symonette to fast track the Coroner's Inquest into Brenton's death. Ultimately, as the details and truth is revealed in the Coroner's Inquest, actions can then be taken to ensure that what happened to Brenton does not happen again.

We, the undersigned, call on the Attorney General Brent Symonette, Government of The Bahamas, to consider the Brenton Hector Smith case as a priority given that he was killed by police while not posing a threat to anyone.

We ask that a date be set without delay for the Coroner's Inquest into the death of Brenton Hector Smith.
