Wizards of the Coast has a very successfull Online version of thier popular game Magic the Gathering. Decipher has an Online version of thier Lord of the Rings CCG in Beta Testing.
The way these work is, instead of buying physical cards you buy and trade virtual cards and can play people all over the world.
Magic the Gathering is doing extremly well, and I am in currently in the Lord of the Rings Beta and believe it will do just as well with fans of that game.
We the fans of the Yu-Gu-Oh card game feel Konami/Upper Deck should develop a similar Online game for Yu-Gu-Oh using the cards and rules from the physical card game. None of the crap of the single player Playstation games.
