Description/History:
Last year approximately 55,000 horses were slaughtered in Canada. This number is expected to rise due to American Horses now crossing the border to Canada for slaughter.

This is not about killing horses for export of human consumption, this is about the cruelty that surrounds every facet of the industry. Horses are transported to and from the stockyards in crowded, inappropriately sized dangerous trucks.

They are pushed thru auctions where they are jammed into crowded metal pens where they are subject to being kicked and bitten by other horses. The floors are often slippery causing them to fall with poor chance of getting up uninjured. They are transported LONG distances to feedlots and/or slaughter facilities.

Often being denied food and water. A feedlot in Canada had 13,000 horses in only 7 paddocks. Each paddock had dead and near death horses in it. Suffereing from starvation and dehydration.

The slaughter facilities flooring is slippery and horse slip and slide all over the place. The captive bolt gun proves to be ineffective in stunning the horse on the first try. Horses endure botched slaughters repeatedly. At least one plant in the US used a rifle to shoot them in the head at close range.

The bolt gun must be used on a precise spot on the horses head to be effective. How many horses do you think stand still? They endure horrific cruelty during the process. This must be stopped but only if export for slaughter can be stopped at the same time or horses will be exported to places such as Mexico where horses are stabbed repeatedly down the back in an effort to severe their spinal cord.

A paralyzed horse is not a dead horse. Be a voice for these horses. Help to end the horrific cruelty. Sign the petition and be heard for the herd.
Petition:
To: The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture, We the undersigned, call on the Federal Government, to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Everyday that the Government delays, results in thousands more horses enduring the most horrific of experiences.

A recent investigation by The Humane Society of the United States documents the abuses of horses quietly funneled to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada:
http://www.hsus.org/mexico_horse_slaughter
Horses endure long transport in trucks that are inappropriate for safe equine transport.

They are routinely denied food and water and are left on feedlots with no shelter in over crowded conditions.

Please follow the choice of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to federally ban horse slaughter and deny Ministry of Agriculture resources for inspection that will result in the closure of all horse slaughter facilities in Ontario.

In addition, to prevent the export of horses for slaughter to places such as Mexico, where horses are; left outside in extreme heat with no shelter or water and then stabbed to death in a barbaric fashion, we ask that an export ban is also considered.

As you can see, there is an urgent need to act quickly to finally end the terribly inhumane practice of horse slaughter and make sure our country's horses are never again subjected to the horrors of slaughter, either here in Canada or anywhere else, for French and Belgian menus. Every day the Government delays, hundreds of our horses suffer this terrible fate.

Thank you for your help.
