Background (Preamble):
Blagojevich Administration's pending closing of the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park at Sheffield, IL and including 10 other state parks.
The doors to the historic sites are to close Oct. 1, and the state parks gated Nov. 1.
We, the Friends of the Hennepin Canal helped celebrate the 100 year of the canal last October, 2007.
This park is used on an everyday basis by a diversifed groups of many people be they, those that come to fish, bike, hike, picnic, camp, have reunions, wedding receptions, snow mobile, ice skate, cross country ski, ride horses, nature watching, or just to enjoy the outoors. Boy and Girl Scouts even earn badges and have outings on the canal. School groups come out to learn about nature and the canal. All of this gone with a stroke of the pen!
Please show your support in keeping the canal and other state parks and historic sites open, with your stroke of a pen and sign our petition.

Because the Hennepin Canal Parkway is sustained by flowing water, and
Because a breach in the canal’s levies or aqueducts would result in a dry ruin, and
Because the Hennepin Canal would be nearly impossible to restore if allowed to go dry, and
Because the Hennepin Canal is a valuable living historical structure, and
Because the Hennepin Canal is a valuable outdoor recreational site for tens of thousands of citizens,
We the undersigned urge the Governor and General Assembly to resolve their differences and appropriate funding necessary to maintain the Hennepin Canal Parkway.
