2. Preservation of Bushland at Edith Cowan University

Edith Cowan University management have no plans to maintain the majority of bushland areas on the university grounds. It is likely that these areas will be flattened for future development.

Why is this important?
- ECU campuses are known for their iconic Australian bushland surroundings.
- There are currently no intentions to preserve extensive areas of existing bushland at ECU Joondalup campus.
- Urbanisation is a major contributing factor toward climate change, clearing native bushland areas will promote an environmentally irresponsible image for ECU in this respect.
- The bushland areas support a range of native wildlife.
- The surrounding bushland at ECU provide a positive and relaxing learning environment for students.
- These areas are valued by the community outside of ECU.

Ensure the continued existence of bushland areas at all Edith Cowan University campuses by signing the online petition for protected Edith Cowan University bushland areas.

3. Meat Free Monday in Thailand

The connection between meat consumption or animal agriculture & environmental pollution is scientifically proven time and time again. What we eat impacts our health and the health of the environment.

According to a 2006 report by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), entitled Livestock's Long Shadow: it stated that livestock production is responsible for 18 percent of all greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions which is more than all the cars, trains and planes combined.

Due to the impact that meat has on the environment, we need to reduce our consumption of this carbon intensive product as an effective solution to the climate change crisis. This petition calls for Thai Government to take action now that will show Thailand’s commitment to tackling Climate Change.

We urge the government to promote every Monday as a day when the citizens of Thailand will abstain from meat products in an effort to protect the environment and halt global warming.

We call on everyone’s support in expressing to Thai Government the need for Thailand to adopt and promote a meat free Monday.

So please sign this petition and forward it to your friends and family.

4. STOP printed Phone directories

28.4 million Yellow Pages per year (official)
22 million Thomson Local per year (official)

How many are used? and at what environmental cost?

This delivery system comes with at massive environmental cost. Not only with the printing and paper used but with the distribution to every home and business.

How many of use just pick them up and put them straight in the bin? or save them and never use them.

With Global Warming being such a huge problem its time to stop this system of waste. We need to create an 'op-in' delivery program. This is we the printed versions are only delivered upon request therefore eliminating pointless waste.

Join this Protest and help us to live in an environmentally cleaner UK.

This is the first protest from 'The Waste Project'. A project looking for a sustainable world.

7. Saving Our Climate

This petition evolved from the Mother’s Day Rally Mothers Unite to Clean up Our Climate! in Federation Square, Melbourne Australia, on 11 May 2008.

The Science is in. The evidence of an emerging climate emergency is stark and overwhelming.

We believe that today’s children - and their children - deserve the same healthy and safe climate we have all enjoyed. Our Earth and the many species that call it home need and deserve better treatment.

Climate scientists still say there is a small, yet rapidly shrinking window of opportunity to halt global warming. Yet our political leaders carry on with ‘business as usual’.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies that can drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions are available NOW.

Australia is the sunniest—and one of the windiest—continents on Earth; what are we waiting for?
We want our taxes to stop fueling climate change by funding fossil-fuel energy sources, and instead go towards establishing energy efficiency schemes and a strong and sustainable renewable energy industry in Australia.

Please sign our petition to demand our politicians show some leadership and act NOW to secure a future that is safe, healthy and best for all—our chance won’t come again!

The world’s eminent climate scientists, such as NASA's James Hansen, say that serious climate-change impacts are already happening more rapidly and at lower global temperature increases than they had originally projected.

Since current GHG levels are believed to be 382ppm (CO2 equivalent) yet temperatures have only risen 0.8 degrees C above pre-industrial levels, we will no doubt feel further heating effects due to lags in response to carbon already present in the system.

The scientists are telling us now that sustained atmospheric concentrations of GHG above 350ppm will lead to the loss of countless species and condemn the remaining life on Earth to an existence of unpredictable and ferocious weather patterns, marked by severe shortages of fresh water.

To avoid the devastating impacts of human induced climate change, we must take all action now to reduce GHG levels to as near as possible to pre-industrial levels and to start actively cooling our planet.

We cannot afford to wait; we will not have this chance again.

For the sake of today’s and tomorrow’s children and all other species on Earth, we demand that our politicians wake up to their primary responsibility, as custodians of Our Environment – OUR COMMON-WEALTH – to protect Australia from the threat of climate change.

We ask our national government to take the following steps that are widely agreed as essential to ensure a secure and healthy future for us all.

8. The Environment Needs OUR Help!

The background information is pretty much that our environment is turning into a dump.

Rainforests are being cut down, and the ozone layer is completely disappearing. Global warming is for a fact, happening. The evidence of global warming is Al Gore's documentation called "An Inconvenient Truth".

Many animals are dying because of global warming, such as polar bears and penguins. They are dying at increasing rates and will end up extinct. In the documentation "An Inconvenient Truth", Al Gore shows stunning statistics.

The one that I found most stunning is that if we continue on like this, some of our major cities will be totally underwater because of the melting ice from the north and south poles. Some of the places are New York City, Miami, Houston, and many others.

12. Protect our Polar Bears Under the Endangered Species Act

Arctic sea-ice is melting at an alarming rate due to global warming. One of the primary animals affected is the polar bear whom is entirely dependent on the Arctic sea-ice. Drownings, once rare, have begun to occur at an alarming rate because of the far distances the bears must swim between substantially thick enough sections of sea-ice. Some scientists have even predicted ice-free summers by the year 2040.

Because of the drastic melt, scientists are seeing thinner bears, lower female reproductive rates and reduced juvenile survival. Of particular importance to this problem, is the recent increase by 28 percent on polar bear quotas in Nunavut. Instead of looking at scientific numbers of bears present within the province, the government of Nunavut chose to make this decision based on Inuit Qaujimatjatuqangit, or traditional knowledge.

Additionally, a significant number of polar bear hunt tags are being sold to American hunters that simply want the experience of bringing home a trophy kill: Canada being the only country where this practice is still legal.

Therefore, we as citizens of the world need to protect the polar bear from extinction, by fighting to have the polar bear added to the Endangered Species Act.

13. Support Proposal to List Polar Bears As "Threatened"

Send in your public comment to support listing polar bears as a "Threatened" species!

Polar bears really need our help: according to government studies in recent months, more and more are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That's less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is requesting public comments regarding the listing of polar bears as a "Threatened" species. In just 5 minutes, you can send in your public comment - just sign this petition.

14. Allow those fleeing Tuvalu to arrive in Australia as Environmental Refugees

Like the majority of the Australian public you may or may not be aware that there is a sovereign Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean called Tuvalu. You may also be unaware that due to the adverse effects of global warming that our country (the single biggest emitter of greenhouses gasses), along with other industrialized states has created, Tuvalu is soon to be our first victim.

Tuvalu is but only nine atolls rising to no more than around 4 metres above sea level and as scientists predict, in less than 50 years the entire nation will be underwater. Tuvalu’s 12,000 inhabitants live off their land, fishing and farming to sustain their way of life. Soon they will find themselves stuck in an untenable situation where at first their daily life will be gravely affected until their entire way of life has been destroyed.

The growing fear of Tuvalu sinking prompted the island to begin to try and strike a deal where its people could slowly migrate to New Zealand and Australia as Environmental Refugees, before the threat robbed them of their lives. New Zealand agreed to begin a 30 year migration program but Australia promptly and flatly denied their request. Then time Australian Attorney General Phillip Ruddock stated, 'Why would I agree with that? I think it is on a 30, 40 or 50-year horizon, if it's going to occur at all.'

Ruddock based his stance on the belief that the evidence he had obtained from the National Tide Facility based at Flinders University that showed no rise in average tide levels since its record keeping began in 1993. What is not known by the average Australian is that this information has been manipulated and is based on a loophole, when looked at deeper; the NTF’s findings are being used for their face value rather than their actual relevance to Tuvalu’s crisis.

Tuvalu’s highest tides continue to grow higher and their lowest lower so therefore there is obviously no change in the NTF’s ‘average’. A much less publicised tide gauge on Tuvalu (and one never mentioned by Mr Ruddock) run by the University of Hawaii’s Sea Centre, covering a much longer period (1976 – 2006) shows a substantial (2.2cm) yearly rise in Tuvalu’s average tide. Mr Ruddock would like us all to believe that the people of Tuvalu are simply lying about their situation.

The problem lies in Tuvalu’s absolute lack of natural resources; therefore there is no benefit to our government taking a vested interest in liberating them from this threat of real global terrorism. With no real economic power it seems there is no real need for our government to help these people. Australia still lets in the one of the lowest amounts of immigrants per capita in the entire world and to add injury to insult, Mr Ruddock requested that Tuvalu find room on its 10 square miles to take in boat people who weren’t allowed into Australia!

You may be shocked that this could go on and still be almost unheard of amongst our public and not represented by our media. Unfortunately the time has come to realise that the majority of our media does hold the journalistic credibility we’d like to believe and our government wants us to behave and think in a way that does not compromise their financial ambitions.

Now a new government has taken power, and with that government comes all the promises of change and social responsibility they have promised to the Australian people. One issue that was never brought up was that of Tuvalu and their situation.

Our new Attorney General Robert McClelland has said little to nothing about Tuvalu in the past. As a member of the opposition in 2007, he stated that

"Even if the sea were to rise less than the predicted 14-32cm in the Pacific by 2050, there would still be devastating results for Pacific islands. The worst case scenario is total inundation. That is a real prospect faced by Tuvalu..."

Now the Rudd government has come into power and we the people must make them accountable for their promise to be a more compassionate and responsible one then their predecessors. If nothing is done, by us, the real people of Australia for them, the real people of Tuvalu, then they will die and there culture will disappear as if it never existed.

We don’t want your money, all we want is for you to use your voice to strengthen theirs and sign this petition so that we can use our democracy for good and make the government do the will of its people.

16. Stop Global Warming

I cannot convince everyone to help stop global warming, but I know something that can, people say one movie can't change the world, but I think this one will.

I highly reccomend you see this movie, it's called "An Inconvenient Truth". I'd say global warming is the most important issue of anything that has ever happened, more important than terrorists or, well, everything! And anyone that thinks global warming is a load of sh** is a bastard and I hope they die of heat exaustion.

There are all these shows on TV about human life after the year 2100, but if global warming continues and if we don't do anything about it then 2100 is marked as about the time that everyone and everything on Earth will die because the planet is starting to boil! And it will keep getting hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter and it won't stop there it will keep going even if the human race and all other life has been killed off by it, it will keep getting hotter because our self running machines are still there burning up the planet.

Soon earth will be a ball of fire (literally) orbiting around another ball of fire, the Sun, if this hasn't convinced you then why don't you go to the cinema and get a big box of popcorn and a large coke or any other drink you want, maybe a packet of chocolate or anything you want and sit down and watch "An Inconvenient Truth" because it will change your life and anyone's life that watches it.

17. US Mayors Climate Protection Act in San Diego

May 14, 2006

U.S. Climate Protection Act.

Global warming places an urgent threat on our environmental, economic and national security and the public health of our communities.

I'm setting out to get the mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders to sign an agreement to reduce green house gas emissions, causing global warming. When federal leadership failed to lead, mayors across the country are rising to the occasion. While 162 countries have ratified the Kyoto Protocol to address global warming, The United States has not.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels.. "I got ticked. I was embarrassed that our country didn't sign the Kyoto Protocol, so I committed to do something on behalf of the people of Seattle." That something is the Climate Protection Act. To date, 224 mayors - representing some 43.7 million Americans in 38 states - have joined with Mayor Nickels. Jerry Sanders has not.

The U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, initiated by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, was introduced on February 16, 2005 the same day that the Kyoto Protocol international global warming treaty took effect for participating countries.

The agreement calls for Mayors of our cities to implement carbon dioxide restrictions on a local level, and is quickly gathering support around the country, recently earning the backing of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

This is the actual Agreement:

The U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement

A. We urge the federal government and state governments to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol target of reducing global warming pollution levels to 7% below 1990 levels by 2012, including efforts to: reduce the United States' dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the development of clean, economical energy resources and fuel-efficient technologies such as conservation, methan recovery for energy generation, wind and solar energy, fuel cells, efficient motor vehicles, and biofuels;

B. We urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan Climate Stewardship Act
sponsored by Senators McCain and Lieberman and Representatives Gilchrist and Olver, which would create a flexible, market-based system of tradable allowances among emitting industries; and

C. We will strive to meet or exceed Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution by taking actions in our own operations and communities such as:

1. Inventory global warming emissions in City operations and in the
community, set reduction targets and create an action plan.

2. Adopt and enforce land-use policies that reduce sprawl, preserve open
space, and create compact, walkable urban communities;

3. Promote transportation options such as bicycle trails, commute trip
reduction programs, incentives for car pooling and public transit;

4. Increase the use of clean, alternative energy by, or example, investing in "green tags", advocating for the development of renewable energy resources, and recovering landfill methane for energy production;

5. Make energy efficiency a priority through building code improvements,
retrofitting city facilities with energy efficient lighting and urging
employees to conserve energy and save money;

6. Purchase only Energy Star equipment and appliances for City use;

7. Practice and promote sustainable building practices using the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program or a similar system;

8. Increase the average fuel efficiency of municipal fleet vehicles; reduce the number of vehicles; launch an employee education program including anti-idling messages; convert diesel vehicles to bio-diesel;

9. Evaluate opportunities to increase pump efficiency in water and
wastewater systems; recover wastewater treatment methane for energy
production;

10. Increase recycling rates in City operations and in the community;

11. Maintain healthy urban forests; promote tree planting to increase shading and to absorb CO2; and

12. Help educate the public, schools, other jurisdictions, professional
associations, business and industry about reducing global warming
pollution.

18. Save the global climate - Drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions now

March 22, 2006

There is an urgent need to tackle Global Warming. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the air is increasing rapidly. The main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide has increased it's concentration by 35% since the industrial revolution and its concentration is rising at over half a per cent per year. As a result the earth has warmed by half a degree Celsius in the last thirty years.

The Arctic is warming much faster than the rest of the world.

The warming is caused by the emissions by human society of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, which absorb infra red light in the lower atmosphere.

Continuing emissions of these gases are causing a grave danger that the Arctic will warm sufficiently to cause the sea ice to melt completely in late summer leading to a runaway greenhouse event.

The best way of avoiding this future is to make huge reductions in greenhouse gas emissions immediately. There should be an immediate global reduction in the emissions of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, by 35%, but assuming the world will not agree to this Britain should take the lead and make these reductions unilaterally by taxing carbon emissions. Hopefully the rest of the world, especially nations with high per capita emissions of greenhouse gases will follow our example.

Even deeper cuts will have to follow so that global greenhouse gas emissions are reduced over the next few years by 75%.

21. Cleaner more ozone friendly energy sources

I know that it is very much need that we start taking more action to help save our ozone layer if we dont do something about this we will have global warming on our hands and everyone will be dead. I propose that we start using more ozone friendly resourses as power instead of fossil fuel. These resourses could include wind power, water power, clean electric power but it sould not be limited to these three. I really think we NEED to do this because if we dont then global warming will kill us all.

I want to live to see many more days without having to worry about this and i think that we sould really start thinking about the big picture: Can we go on doing what we are doing and not have this happen in the possible near future. I hope you take this as seriously as I do because I want are children to have a future.

The Maldives are only about 1 meter above sea-level. If nothing is done, they will disappear in 100 years.
Next will come other costal cities - Dublin, London, New York, etc.

23. Help stop OUR OWN DESTRUCTION - time to switch to clean renewable forms of energy

How many disasters and destruction do we need more to finally learn?

A ruptured tanker called the Prestige, carrying 77,000 tons of fuel oil, almost twice what the Exxon Valdez spilled, sank off the coast of Spain on 19th November 2002. The full impact has yet to be seen, but it is clear that this is already a major environmental disaster. This is a ticking time bomb!

After dozens of spills like these averaging more than one oil spill every two weeks during the 1990s), what will it take for us to reduce our dependence on oil?

As long as we continue to rely on oil for energy there will be more devastating oil spills and global warming will become catastrophic. The only solution is to switch to clean renewable forms of energy like wind power, solar power and the clean green fuels like hydrogen.

We demand our politicians to act NOW, enough is enough. When our beautiful planet will be destroyed it will be too late to cry, regret and say if we only had...

The latest report from the International Panel on Climate Change IPCC) says that hundreds of technologies are already available, at very low cost, to reduce climate damaging emissions and that government policies need to remove the barriers to these technologies. Implementing these solutions will not require humans to make sacrifices or otherwise impede their quality of life. Instead, they will enable people to usher in a new era of energy, one that will bring economic growth, new jobs, technological innovation and, most importantly environmental protection. However, for green solutions to global warming to find a foothold in the market, governments and corporations need to lead the shift away from polluting technology. At present, fossil fuel industries are provided with billions of dollars in subsidies so that dirty energy stays cheap. Polluting industries are allowed to pollute for free, while clean technologies remain under-funded. Developing nations, which have the fastest growing energy needs, are locked into old fashioned fossil fuel technologies by Export Credit Agencies. The time has come for humans to wean themselves off fossil fuels and other climate damaging technologies. Oil companies must stop exploring for more fossil fuels that the world cannot afford to burn. Governments need to subsidise renewable energy and force polluters to pay.

Green technology is ready to take over Wind power is already a significant source of energy in many parts of the world. It can supply 10 percent of the world's electricity within two decades. Solar power has been growing in a global capacity by 33 percent annually. Greenpeace and industry research shows that with some government support, the solar industry could supply electricity to over 2 billion people globally in the next 20 years. By 2040 solar photovoltaics could supply nearly 25 percent of global electricity demand. A report conducted by global financial analysts KPMG shows that solar power would become cost competitive with traditional fossil fuels if the production of photovoltaic panels was increased to 500 megawatts a year. A renewable power plant in Asia could have the same costs and provide the same jobs as a coal fired plant, but with significant environmental advantages. Greenfreeze refrigeration technology, which is safe for the climate and the ozone layer, has spread around the world. It is an ideal solution for developing countries where cost and efficiency are particularly important.

24. A Campaign to save the Rainforests

We are campaigning to save the remaining Rainforests of the world from being destroyed. With this petition and your signature, which will make a difference, we will show the governments of the world that they can no longer ignore the growing problems that are facing the Earth. Without the lungs of this planet global warming will be a very serious issue with which we shall have a point of no return in the coming future.

Some governments are not taking the necessary steps to ensure the welfare of this planet and its inhabitants and some may not realise the importance of the rainforests to the world at large.
So what is so important about the Rainforests? Trees themselves suck up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and then release oxygen, whereas we in turn as humans do the opposite we breathe in the oxygen and release carbon dioxide, with an ever increasing population we need the trees to balance human activity.

The major contributors to global warming are fossil fuels releasing carbon dioxide, fossil fuels are omitted from cars, lorries, planes, and anything that uses combustion. It is reported by scientists in the last 450,000 years, carbon dioxide has not risen as much as it has since the Industrial revolution

The importance of the Rainforests are their positioning, placed within the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn they lie on the Equator which receives the most sun.

With the trees not being destroyed carbon dioxide is absorbed, oxygen is released and the sun's rays can bounce back into space because of lower levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But even in this ideal situation all countries have to reduce their CO2 emissions.

With the Rainforests destroyed, oxygen is not released and carbon dioxide is not absorbed leading to higher levels of this gas in the atmosphere. The sun's rays then hit the Earth and cannot bounce back into space due to these high levels, thereby heating the Earth which also has an effect on the inside of the Earth.

Due to this destruction and global warming, the weather patterns are changing and becoming more irregular and more severe.

Please sign our petition. We don't want our children and their children's life to be determined by people with closed minds. We have to think ahead to the next seven generations.

As our forefathers fought for our freedom it is our turn to secure the future for the coming generations.
