1. Allow Adult Stores in the DMU
The city of Fargo, ND is growing and the culture is changing and current zoning regulations do not allow for further development of adult themed stores to be brought into the downtown area in the zone called Downtown Mixed Use (http://tinyurl.com/fargozoning
[PDF 5.18MB]) regardless of community support.
While the city had the best intentions in 1998 when they sought to revitalize the ailing downtown district and we respect the time, man power, and money that has been used to do so the area has stabilized and the changes that have been strived for have happened. The downtown area is now to a point, however, that many buildings are again for rent and we do not believe that this type of business would detract from the general streetscape while it would still provide a well needed service to patrons.
The culture of the area has significantly changed and the general population of the downtown area is now made up of students more than any other demographic due to the expansion of the North Dakota State University campuses and the proximity of the Concordia and Minnesota State University – Moorhead campuses. These students are looking for something safe and available to them that will accept them for who they are and stress the need to have sex be something fun, yet still be safe, as well as provide an outlet to provide education regarding sexual health and wellness. The city has also become the site of the FM Pride parade and a great number of celebrations each summer which again goes to show the change in culture that the city has undergone over the last number of years.
2. Support Fill the Dome Awareness
In June 2007, student council leaders from each of the Fargo-Moorhead area High Schools got together and formed the Metro Student Council Ambassadors.
As a group, they wanted to do something big, something to highlight their senior year of high school. A couple of phone calls, lots of donations and few espressos later, Fill The Dome was born. The goal? Fill the entire floor of the Fargodome (80,000 sq. ft) with food for local food pantries.
This year, Fill the Dome is in its third year of operation and students are even more motivated to do something great. The goals for this years event are: 75 tons of food, $75,000, and 7,500 signatures of awareness for hunger.
3. Oppose Rezoning neighborhoods to the North and/or East of the University of North Dakota
The Grand Forks City residents below are against the rezoning application Z54 for the purpose of rezoning the present R4 and R2 neigborhoods to the north and/or east of the University of North Dakota, (the area between 1st Avenue North and 10th Avenue North and the area between Columbia Road North and North 20th Street) on 6.583 acres located at the northeast intersection of Mars Hill Road and Burnt Hickory Road to the proposed suburban condominium zoning.
We are against this application due to concerns over spot zoning precedent; where one condominium is allowed more can follow, impact on our roads; we contend that 28 units regardless of age restriction will impact more than the current residential zoning, and the overall concern over the enforcement of the senior restriction and the resulting impact on our schools and roads.
