1. Save Mandurah Horse Herd

Almost a year ago a herd of horses were found in a paddock in Mandurah, these horses and ponies are being neglected, malnourished and just left for dead.

There is constantly new horses arriving and old horses vanishing. People have personally witnessed the condition of these poor animals and some have been left to die in the paddock.

After several months of trying to get something done through animal welfare organisations and getting nowhere this has been our next option and we can take our supporter numbers to the media.

Unfortunately the owner is refusing to sign over any of these animals so there is nothing Second Chance Horse Rescue can do as they do not have the legal power to seize them.

3. Save Richmond Greyhound Racing's Friday Nights

GRNSW have put forward proposed changes to the TAB racing calendar as a result of additional meetings becoming available via Sky Racing2. The proposed changes will come into effect on 30 March 2010.

In these proposed changes to the TAB racing calendar, Richmond Greyhound Racing Club will be moved from 29 twilight races on Monday and 51 Friday night races to 52 which are broadcast on Sky Racing1 Wednesday night and 26 Saturday twilight races broadcast on the new Sky Racing2 channel.

With a long history of Friday night racing at Richmond attended by a large number of families with children who can enjoy an evening where it is safe and appropriate for their children, the move to 29 Saturday twilight races has numerous impacts on the club not only in terms of secondary income but on-course betting from fewer crowds and off-course betting with the uncertainty of audience numbers and subscribers to Sky Racing2. We all know that if you can't see a race, then you're unlikely to bet on it.

The club is putting in a submission opposing these proposed changes, however, we need your support - our community - to let the governing bodies know your thoughts. Please sign this petition which will be sent to The Hon. Kevin Greene MP, NSW Minister for Gaming & Racing to lobby for these changes not to be rubber stamped and for the speedy implementation of a truly independent GRNSW board.

4. Bring Back Wimbledon Speedway

Wimbledon Speedway was founded in 1928 and have raced at Wimbledon Stadium, Plough Lane between 1928 and 1991 and again from 2002, until the stadium owners refused to extend our tenancy at the end of 2005.

The club has won multiple League Championships, World Individual Titles and many other domestic trophies, and are the most successful professional team sports club in the borough.

After five years away from the track, our efforts are now concentrated on bringing the club back to a competitive existence within its spiritual home.

For this we simply require the support of the local council, London Borough of Merton.

Please sign the petition, completing all the required fields, to show your support for the return of the Wimbledon 'Dons' Speedway Club.

5. Change the Law to save Greyhounds

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 has been over a decade in the making. It came into force on April 6th 2007 and is a very wide-ranging piece of legislation providing a general framework for the protection of animals.

However, even though it makes specific provisions for certain animals, it only provides secondary legislation for greyhounds. As a result of concerns expressed during the Parliamentary debates on the Animal Welfare Bill, the government has promised to improve the regulation of the greyhound racing industry. New arrangements are scheduled to be in place by 2009 to provide further protection for ex-racing greyhounds.

Therefore, this is a very important time for greyhound welfare as there has never been a better opportunity to influence and achieve proper welfare provisions for ex-racing greyhounds in this country.

The Alliance of Independent Greyhound Rescues (AIGR) has been formed to allow independent charities to speak with one voice to try to exert the maximum influence for the good of the dogs. They have this one chance to influence the Department for Environmental Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to come up with decent regulations. Between us, independent charities rescue a large number of greyhounds every year and spend many thousands of pounds clearing up the mess made by the industry. We are entitled to be heard.

At present, the Government looks inclined to go along with the Racing Industry and opt for self-regulation with minimal regulations.

The fact is that, regardless of legislation, there are now more unwanted greyhounds than Tia and other independent charities can ever rescue. The numbers must be cut if things are to improve in the future. In the first four months of 2007, Tia has taken thirty strays mainly from the Yorkshire and Lancashire Pounds, with Tia usually having to arrange collection of the dogs themselves. The National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) are now investigating all of the greyhounds Tia have rescued which were stray under Rule 18.

Many charities do not have an ongoing relationship with pounds in their areas. This is regrettable because they will probably be putting greyhounds to sleep. However, they are not obliged to co-operate with charities. Some are good and others are bad in terms of welfare and in making information on stray greyhounds available.

It would be invaluable if all pounds were required to keep a record of the earmarks of the greyhounds they deal with.

6. A better life for greyhounds

Every year at least 10,000 greyhounds retire from racing in the UK. Many of these simply 'disappear'.

Racing greyhounds may face a number of welfare issues during their lives including:-

* Overbreeding leading to thousands of unwanted dogs being killed.
* Injuries caused by inappropriate track surface and design.
* Being abandoned and killed when they don't make the grade.

When they retire greyhounds meet one of 9 fates, 6 of which are totally unacceptable.

1. Abandoned and end up being taken to the local pound.
2. Abandoned and die.
3. Abandoned and then found by a member of the public and kept as a pet.
4. Abandoned and found by a rescue organisation and rehomed.
5. Killed by their owner.
6. Euthanased by a vet.

The acceptable alternatives to this are:-

1. Kept by their owner as a pet.
2. Rehomed to a good home by their owner.
3. Handed to a rescue organisation and then rehomed.

10. Stop Greyhound Racing!!!

Once the favorite pet of pharaohs and kings, in modern-day America the greyhound is merely the means to an end for an intrinsically cruel and unnecessary form of gambling.
In dog racing, there is only one ultimate goal: profit. And when the graceful greyhounds don't meet that need, most are expendable. Some are placed as pets, but many must be killed - to the tune of up to an estimated 20,000 each year. The "fortunate" ones are killed humanely. Others become documented horror stories. But thousands disappear to fates unknown. PLEASE HELP US STOP GREYHOUND RACING!
