2. End to Glasgow University Student Occupations

On the 22nd of March 2011 the University of Glasgow tried to evict the students occupying the Hetherington Building.

This was met with considerable resistance by those within the building and a large police presence was required to keep things under control.

After this, protesters moved to the Senate Rooms to begin a new occupation. The protesters have called police actions 'heavy handed'.

3. Safer pedestrian access to Glasgow Green

On 8/3/2011 Dog walkers witnessed a dog being run over outside Glasgow Green Park on Greendyke Street. The car did not stop. This could just as easily have been a child or any other pedestrian.

Crossing the road along Greendyke Street poses great risk and potential danger to pedestrians due to the volume of cars using the road and the speed of many of the cars ‘racing’ the lights where the road joins Saltmarket.

Also there is no give way from Turnbull Street to Greendyke Street and vehicles often race out of the junction or other drivers race along Greendyke Street to prevent vehicles from Turnbull Street pulling in front of them.

The ‘on street’ parking either side of the street also adds to the danger as families blindly step out from between parked cars then dart between traffic to cross over.

Walkers and their dogs run in front of on coming vehicles to get to the other side.

We want Glasgow City Council to conduct a review of the safety of pedestrians that use Glasgow Green and consider adding speed bumps or additional pedestrian crossings adjacent to the park entrances so we can all get to the park safely.

5. Conduct a Glasgow Council Enquiry

Labour have been in control of Glasgow City Council for far too long, and as a result I believe they have become corrupt. on April 1st 2010 a request was given to vote on an enquiry to the dealings within the council. Labour voted against an enquiry, so what have they got to hide?

Some of these council leaders should not be allowed to remain in office and should be replaced A.S.A.P.

Our city is bleeding hundreds of thousands of pounds per year on jobs for the boys.

This needs to stop now.

6. Review the Glasgow Commonwealth Games LOGO

I surely cannot be the only one who thinks that the new logo for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for 2014 is utter rubbish.

The fact that it cost £95000 to create beggars belief. Scandalous and criminal. Anyone who uses a computer could design a better one in 5 minutes. That can be put to the test.

7. Help save Otago Lane, Glasgow

Otago Lane is under threat from a massive planned development.

Otago Lane is a beautiful West End conservation area with unique independent shops, a small parking area and a charming Mews building. All this is currently under threat, as a local developer has submitted plans to put up four very modern blocks of flats.

Not only will this irrevocably change the look and feel of the area, especially as it will be highly visible from across the river at Gibson street and Great Western Road, but may put the futures of the independent retailers at risk. Currently we have a great selection of small shops, Voltaire and Rousseau (which is regularly used as a filming location), Mixed up Records, Ken Chapelle clock repair and of course Tchai Ovna.

We ask you to sign in order to help us protect the integrity of this beautiful and unique corner of the West End.

8. North Kelvin Meadow Campaign

The North Kelvin Meadow Campaign (www.northkelvinmeadow.com) is a voluntary community organisation in Glasgow. At the end of 2008, volunteers began to transform a derelict playing field into an inspiring green space, including a meadow, woodland, a community orchard and allotments.

Glasgow council wants to sell the land for flats, but local people feel strongly that it should remain a community space and do not want these flats on the land. Local authorities are required by law to provide allotment sites and Cosla, the umbrella body for Scotland's councils, has compiled a report which urges local authorities to acquire, manage and develop more land for allotments.

Currently the waiting list for allotments in the area is eight years. Please support us by signing the petition and writing to your MP, MSP and Glasgow Council about it! Thanks.

9. Restore Post Study Work Visas

This is a petition requesting all international graduates from UK Universities to fight for rights for the post study work visa. So many international students have been rejected the post study work scheme because of shortfall in funds which was not clearly explained. This is unfair and seriously questions the credibility of this rule as it is intentionally meant to rob students of their post study work permit. This is discriminatory and racist.

10. The Blood Money Stops Now!

FUND EDUCATION NOT WAR
What links Glasgow University to the seige of Gaza?

Since Israel's savage bombardment and invasion of Gaza in late December, thousands of civilians (including hundreds of children) have been killed or maimed by Israeli weapons. Britain has consisently sold weapons to Israel despite their ongoing occupation of Palestinian land. Over recent years it has licensed arms exports to Israel worth between £10 - 25 million each year. In the first half of 2008 alone the UK government approved arms worth over £24 million.

Many of these weapons were purchased from companies such as BAE Systems (White Phosphorus bombs), Lockheed Martin (F-16 jets) and Westland Helicopters (Apache Attack Helicopters) - companies that our university is deeply involved with - and have been used by Israel to commit war crimes in Gaza.

Over the last eight years, Glasgow University has received upwards of £5 million from companies involved in the development and manufacture of weapons technology. This includes £131 000 from BAE Systems to the Computer Science Department, £198 000 from Westland Helicopters to the Aerospace Engineering Department, and much more. The Ministry of Defence has also made multiple payments to various departments across campus.

For our universit to be funded by those who make weapons for murderers is an outrage.

We should put a stop to it.

END LINKS WITH WAR CRIMES
DIVESTMENT NOW!

11. Show the DEC crisis appeal at Glasgow University

Like millions around the world, we are aghast at the BBC's decision not to air the Disasters Emergency Comittee (DEC) Gaza Crisis Appeal. During the recent onslaught on Gaza, many of us considered that the BBC reporting tacitly and too-uncritically accepted the Israeli narrative of events. However, with this refusal even to air a plea for help, the BBC has gone a step further.

Far from demonstrating 'impartiality', the BBC has shown itself to be thoroughly and cravenly partial - against the Palestinians - to the digust, of course, of most of its employees.

What is it that makes this case different from the DEC appeals the BBC has broadcast, which included many others about situations caused by conflict? It can only be the parties involved in the case.

12. Address Collegelands Parking Problem

This petition is in response to the parking problems in the Collegelands Buildings.

There are 2 buildings in particular involved, the Bell Street Flats and Parsonage Square. Both buildings are owned by Ross and Liddell. As a resident of these flats I get annoyed every time I need to park my vehicle and there are no spaces available.

It is unjust that as a resident I have to pay parking fines for parking my vechile in my residential parking area, or when I receive disgruntled notes from other residents when we park in there spaces to avoid fines, or when a padlocked gate is locked to avoid my car leaving a car park.

Today my car was towed from the residential car park by Glasgow City Council and I am expected to pay £130 pounds to get my vehicle back.

This petition is in response to these problems faced everyday by the residents of these buildings. This petition wants Glasgow City Council to stop entering a private residential car park to issue unnecessary fines or towing vehicles away without warning.

This petition wants more spaces made available to the residents of the Collegelands Buildings. Over 40 car park spaces are empty everyday in the Strathclyde Postgraduate Halls.

This petition wants Ross and Liddell and Glasgow City Council to resolve the parking problems in the Collegelands buildings.

13. Hands Off Our Box Office

PLEASE HELP US!! Ambassadors Theatre Group plan to close the box office at Theatre Royal Glasgow, and the Sales Office at the Kings Theatre Glasgow is set to be moved to a LONDON BASED CALL CENTRE which will result in 27 REDUNDANCIES.

Patrons calling for tickets (many of whom are elderly) will be forced to call London where staff have no intimate knowledge of either Theatre, and will also possibly be forced to pay a higher booking fee.

Glasgow City Council have agreed to give ATG £7.2 million between now and 2012 to cover the cost of refurbishment at The Kings. THIS IS TAXPAYERS MONEY - but ATG is making the same taxpayers redundant!!

Please show your support by signing our petition!! THANK YOU.

***********************************************************************
Thurs 25th Sept - Due to some feedback we have had, we would like to make an amendment and also draw attention to a couple of points.

1. ATG would like us to point out that the box office at the Theatre Royal will be open just prior to the start of a show so as to allow patrons to buy tickets on the door for that performance. There will be no over the counter ticket sales for the rest of working hours.

2. We have been informed by ATG that there will be a booking fee for tickets bought over the phone with the London call centre but it will not be higher than the booking fee paid at present for the time being.

3. We have also been informed that the staff at the London call centre will recieve a higher rate of pay than the Glasgow staff and will also be paid commision.

4. As there seems to be some confusion regarding this matter, we ourselves would like to draw attention to the fact that the box office at the Kings Theatre will still be open for counter sales. It is the Theatre Royal box office in the centre of town that is being closed, not the Kings. This was stated in the history/description section of the petition from the very beginning.

To keep everything fair and just - If, after reading this update, supporters feel that they want their name removed from the petition, please email us your name and city at - handsoff2008@hotmail.co.uk and your name will be promptly removed.
Also, please email if anyone has any questions about the situation/petiton, we will do our very best to get back to you as quickly as we can.

Let us also take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone for their continued support on this matter.

14. Pollokshields Re-development

Residents of the deck access flats in Pollokshields are calling for them to be demolished to make way for brand new housing.

A recent report published as part of the GoWell health study found that one in three families in the flats have at least one family member who suffers from asthma.

Residents complain that the flats are damp, cramped, hard to heat and have poor noise insulation.

Southside Housing Association and Glasgow Housing Association are working together to create a plan to demolish the flats to make way for new homes.

Glasgow City Council has the power to fill the last piece of the funding jigsaw to make the development happen.
We hope you will support residents in their campaign.

15. The future of Shawlands

For generations of people, Shawlands has been a major shopping centre in the southside of Glasgow: we want it to stay that way.

Over the last 18 months, the G41 community newspaper has run lots of stories where people have expressed their fears about the future of Shawlands.

The same questions come up over and over again:
- What's going to happen to the Shawlands Arcade?
- What effect will the massive Silverburn shopping centre in Pollok have on the area?
- How can traders cope with increasing rents?
- Why are so many shops closing?
- What can be done to improve transport and parking?
- How can Shawlands be made more attractive?
- Should part of the area be pedestrianised?
- How can Shawlands be made safer at evenings and weekends?
- What can be done about the state of roads and pavements?

Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council has been talking about these issues for a while and had plans to carry out a community survey to find out what local people and traders would like to see happen in the area.

The community council has to be applauded for raising the idea - but with the best will in the world, it's too big a job for a voluntary body to take on.

That's why G41 is now calling on the local Community Planning Partnership and Glasgow City Council to take up the issue.

16. Block glasgow in on footie days

Most Rangers and Celtic fans are not from Glasgow. By not allowing people into Glasgow this would reduce the bigots funding their cause through football.
