1. Fresh Elections in August 2012

Although the new Constitution stripped the president’s power to dissolve Parliament, and therefore cause new general elections, the new Constitution clearly fixed the date for the general elections for Members of Parliament, to be “on the second Tuesday in August in every fifth year.”

This date is mandatory and automatic under Article 101 of the constitution. Members of the 10th Parliament were elected—and I always use the term sparingly, given some were obviously rigged in, on December 27, 2007. The members were sworn in on that cantankerous 15th day of January, 2008, which means, the next Parliamentary elections must be on August 14, 2012, under Article 101 of the constitution (second Tuesday in August of the 5th year), counting from the date of election, not the date of swearing in.

This is the only interpretation that makes sense and, even though one other might (holding the first elections under the new Constitution in December 2012), all others must be viewed with great suspicion as mischief must be lurking underneath.

2. We need election reform and campain finance limits

The officials that we the People of the United States of America elect to office are no longer working for us. Our politicians are working for the corporations and special interest groups that pay them large sums of money.

We need to stop this and get our politicians to work for us.

3. Contre Driss Lachgar

4. They broke it. Make them pay to fix it!

They broke it. . . . Make them pay to fix it!

There is a crisis . . . but it is NOT a deficit or debt crisis.
  • There is an employment crisis because of a lack of decent stable jobs.

  • There is a moral crisis because the rich and well connected want the rest of us to pay for their irresponsible speculation, fraud and greed.

  • There is a crisis of democracybecause our political system is dominated by people with money rather than people with good ideas.
WORKING PEOPLE & THE POOR DIDN'T CAUSE THE CRISIS!
We've made our sacrifices. . . . We sacrificed our jobs, standard of living, health care, children's education, retirement security, the environment and the precious lives of our loved ones in wars.
WHAT HAVE THE PRIVILEGED ELITE SACRIFICED?

Let those who caused the crisis now make their sacrifices!

7. House Proud - Devolved

As campaigning ahead of May’s national elections hots up in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, social housing is facing the squeeze.

Housing budgets have already been cut across the board and the immediate future appears far from bright for those who rely on social or affordable housing.

It is against this background that we launch House Proud - Devolved - a new stage in our campaign to ensure politicians and decision-makers in The Senedd, Holyrood and Stormont understand housing’s importance.

House Proud was a joint initiative from Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing, run ahead of the 2010 general election. Its aim was to shout about housing’s crucial contribution to every aspect of social policy. Almost 300 hundred people signed a petition in support of the campaign, the three main political parties included housing pledges in their election manifestos and their leaders pledged their support.

Now, the campaign seeks to prove housing’s case in the devolved nations. Once again we will focus on the significant financial and practical benefits the sector delivers to areas including health, education, anti-social behaviour and sustainability.

8. Include Patrick Harvie in the Holyrood 2011 leader debates

The BBC and STV have selected only four leaders from the five political parties in the Scottish Parliament to take part in the showpiece leader debates, scheduled to be broadcast during the crucial last week of campaigning, excluding the Scottish Green Party's male co-convener Patrick Harvie.

Recent polling has shown that the Greens may well be part of a formal coalition that forms the next Government after the May 5th election and may well help to shape the policies that the next Scottish Government enacts.

It is not too late to send a message to the broadcasters that it should not be for them to decide which political parties get to take part in the primetime debates discussing Scotland's future and it is not too late to pressure the broadcasters into ensuring that there are five podiums in place for these debates rather than four.

Scotland deserves as thorough and as wide-ranging a debate as can be realistically and fairly achieved.

9. Petition to remove the coalition government from power!

David Cameron stated that he would not cancel the EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance)
David Cameron stated that family allowance would not be affected and it was safe under a Conservative administration

George Osborne and David Cameron both denied that they had any plans to raise VAT and that the Labour party was trying to “scare” the electorate (Evening Standard, 2010)

The Conservative party said there would be no major top down reforms of the NHS in this parliament (Lansley, 2009)

Nick Clegg stated unequivocally that he and all 57 MP’s would vote against ANY increase in tuition fees (Libdem manifesto, 2010)

The Conservative party policy stated that failures in the penal system and law and order was due to Labour’s failed policies and anyone convicted of a knife crime would go to prison and more prison places would be made available (Conservative Manifesto, p57)

George Osborne stated that Labour had not regulated the banks enough and no one working in a Bank that had been saved by the state should get more than a £2,000 cash bonus (Conservative Party website, 2009)

Bonfire of the quangos.  To get rid of quangos to make them more efficient, accountable and more cost effective (Cameron, 2009)

The result

David Cameron now says EMA’s don’t work and is scrapping them, always quoting one survey supporting this view that 9 out of 10 students would still do the course even if the EMA was withdrawn, ignoring other evidence and a larger body of evidence that suggests EMA significantly increases the chances of students starting and finishing the courses in higher education

Family allowance is cut for a section of the population

VAT increased to 20% and no statement to state if this is permanent or not.

The largest most far reaching reforms of the NHS have been announced since 1945, costing several billions of pounds at a time the government is strapped for cash. Causing uncertainty in the service and without a consensus or rolling the changes out giving evidence the changes are working – THIS FAR REACHING REFORM WAS NOT IN THE MANIFESTO

Tuition fees increased by up to 300%, although with some progressive safeguards, these could easily be over turned at any time by future administrations

Kenneth Clarke has announced the biggest turn around in prison and law and order policy known in the UK. People voted for the Conservative Party to be strong on law and order and to build more prisons.  They have announced a closure of 3,000 prison places.  fewer people to be sent to prison and declaring that prison does not work and then cutting the police budgets.

George Osborne we now know in recent negotiations tried to water down EU recommendations for regulating the banks.  There will be no limitations on bonuses (Monbiot, 2011)

The bonfire of the quangos was more like a child’s sparkler.  They failed to understand that many of the quangos actually do something and there is no one else to do it.  The restructuring was announced without any research into who will carry out the functions after the restructuring or how much it will cost.  It could well cost more than it did before the reforms. The House of Lords, the biggest quango in our country has been bolstered by the Conservative party with a massive new intake to increase support for the coalition.  There is no timetable for reform of the upper house.

It means as students next month if and when you vote you will have to make a decision to select your choice of 31 different positions. 31.

Do you think that might confuse you. I think it would confuse all of us. What this leads to is misrepresentation and a student body with a less effective voice to fight for your rights and give you the best possible service.

15. Fight For South Sudan's Independence

South Sudanese Needs Your Help!

South Sudan has been attacked time and time again with the South losing nearly 2.5 million people in genocidal acts by the Northern government. In Darfur another 400,000 have also been targeted and killed by militia regimes of the North. South Sudan finally has a chance of electing its independence in January of 2011. Now a worldwide team of college students led by Samuel Chol and Ryan Gilbert will work to ensure South Sudan has a fair election by being in South Sudan for the election and uploading live video footage on the youtube account.

Sudan, Africa’s largest and perhaps most dangerous country, has been at war with itself since gaining independence from Britain in 1956. The first Civil War started in 1955 which lasted until 1972 with the peace agreement that was signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by the Sudanese People Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/SPLA). This peace agreement was dishonored again by the Khartoum government which resulted in another round of war that began in 1983 when the government of Sudan imposed Islamic Sharia law to all Sudanese.

These two wars were fought in Southern Sudan and were two of the longest and deadliest wars fought in 20th and 21st century. Roughly 2 million civilians were killed in Southern Sudan, and more than 5 million Southerners have been forced to flee their homes and are now living in a refugee camps around the world.

The civilian death toll is one of the highest of any war since World War II. The war ended when the SPLA/SPLM signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) with the Khartoum government in January 2005 in Nairobi, Kenya. This agreement gives the Southern Sudanese an opportunity to vote for separation to be a separate country or remain united.

The North is predominantly Arab Muslims and the South is indigenous African Christians. The North has carried out massive genocides towards the South for decades and in recent years has also attacked Darfur in the West. The National Congress Party, an Islamist group controlling and manipulating the South and Darfur states, attacked the Southerners for their religion of Christianity and oil, and the Darfur people for their Non-Arab heritage.

Sudan’s corrupt President, Omar al-Bashir, was indicted by the International Criminal Court in 2009 for war crimes against humanity, which led to him to expelling all major humanitarian groups working to help the victims of the Darfur genocide, especially women and children. Colin Powell, former US Secretary of State, called Darfur genocide in 2004 and insisted the United Nations militarily intervene, which they did not.
The people of South have been oppressed by the Khartoum government in the North in many ways: No access to education, no freedom of religion, and most importantly no equal share of its own resources.

This coming referendum on January 9, 2011, gives the Southerners a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get their lives back. However, the Khartoum government is divisive with the voting process because there are high possibilities that Southerners will vote for separation and the North is willing to do anything to postpone the referendum. If this happens, there is a chance that the war might resume.

16. Party Leaders "Come Dine with Me"

Recent developments in the UK election suggest that the public are increasingly interested in understanding what makes our potential future PM's tick. Not just in terms of policy: but what sort of person sits behind the mask.

The leader debates have been informative - but now it is time to turn up the heat: and how better to do so than to see what our leaders-to-be are like when the social pressure is on.

What would they cook? How would they be as hosts? And most important, when a deadline looms, can they multi-task.

How an individual performs in the kitchen surely says as much - or more about them than any number of formal debates.

17. Begin the immediate withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan

During the election campaign many politicians are trying to avoid the issue of the war in Afghanistan.
This is because despite the massive popular opposition the the war, all three main parties support it.

We believe the war should be a central issue in the election campaign. British soldier deaths and expenditure are spiralling upwards just at a time when
all parties are calling for massive cuts in public spending. The projected costs of the war this year are almost the same as the amount the government plan to cut from the NHS.

Meanwhile the war is creating misery and destruction for the people of Afghanistan.

18. Stop the Fraudulent Elections in Sudan

The current situation in Sudan is extremely volatile. The Sudanese government violently cracked down on peaceful protesters on December 7 and 14, proving that it is unwilling to create the conditions for free and fair elections, currently scheduled for April 2010. If illegitimate elections are held, the entirety of Sudan – including Darfur - is likely to topple into renewed civil war.

Despite this obvious violation of basic freedoms, the U.S. has yet to impose genuine consequences on those obstructing peace in Sudan. If nothing changes before April, U.S. taxpayers will have spent nearly $100 million to support the election of an indicted war-criminal and legitimize the iron-fisted rule of one of the world’s most oppressive regimes.

President Obama promised consequences for Sudan if Khartoum did not meet benchmarks for peace — tell the White House that Sudan must feel real consequences for its actions NOW!

22. Open Letter to Mr Khamenei

Versions / Verzioni / ترجمه ها
http://open-letter-to-mr-khamenei.blogspot.com

Cher Monsieur,

En 1906 avec sa Révolution Constitutionnelle, le peuple iranien est un des premiers peuples de l’Asie à se battre pour établir une Démocratie moderne. La victoire de la Révolution est volée par l’Empire Britannique qui installe la dictature des Pahlavis ;

En 1951 vos compatriotes investissent les urnes et élisent un gouvernement dirigé par le Docteur Mossadeq. La nationalisation du pétrole iranien ne plait pas à tout le monde et la CIA, à l’aide du gouvernement Britannique, monte un coup d’état et réinstalle le dictateur déchu ;

En 1979 vos compatriotes, y compris vous-même, récidivent et se lèvent pour obtenir : l’Indépendance, la Liberté et la Justice Sociale. Ils arrivent à renverser le régime du Shah, mais la victoire de la Révolution est dépouillée par un groupe de ces dirigeants, auquel vous appartenez ;

Au printemps 1997 les Iraniens participent massivement aux élections présidentielles et au lieu d’élire votre candidat favori, élisent un démocrate, M. Mohammad Khatami. A l’aide de vos amis, et en tordant le cou aux lois que vous êtes supposé défendre, vous sabotez toutes les initiatives de ce gouvernement pour en faire un gouvernement fantoche ;

23. Support Democracy & Human Rights in Iran

To the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd,

On June 12, 2009, millions of Iranians, many of whom have friends and family here in Australia, went to the polls to elect their next president. Unlike the 2005 presidential elections where 48% of the electorate voted in run-off elections to choose Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, many more voters were expected to and did turn-out to vote against his disastrous domestic and foreign policies.

However, even before a tally of the votes could be taken Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his supporters declared victory with 63% of the popular vote. With lightning speed his rival’s campaign headquarters were closed, many of their leaders were arrested and a heavy police and paramilitary presence was brought into the streets. Are these the actions of someone who has won a free and fair election?

Although the world does not yet realize it, on June 13th we witnessed an unprecedented coup d’état veiled in the guise of a popular election. If this coup is allowed to succeed and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) are allowed to consolidate their power, not only will they pose a danger to the Iranian people, but will also become a much greater threat to the outside world.
The implications of this coup are far-reaching. Whereas before the hard-line elements in the IRGC were held in check by the Supreme Leader and the clergy, over the last four years they have come to assume a position of immense power in Iran.

This coup represents the consummation of their new position in the state, and has grave implications for the Iranian people, Australia and the Western world.

27. Zimbabwe: Restore Democracy and Foreign Aid

The government of Zimbabwe is giving its impoverished citizens a stark choice: Vote for President Robert Mugabe in the upcoming election — or starve.

Millions rely on food aid in Zimbabwe, but yesterday the regime ordered that foreign aid organizations cease operations. The Zimbabwean government's own food aid programs are now the only source of sustenance for much of the population.

There is solid evidence that in order to receive food aid from the government, Zimbabweans must first show their party registration cards.

If they have a card from Mugabe's ruling party they can have access to food, but if they only have opposition cards they must turn over their national identification cards in order to receive the food they need.

The government holds onto the cards until after the June 27 election — meaning opposition party members will not be able to identify themselves when they go to vote.

29. Stop abuses by the government of ARMENIA

The Government of President Kocharian has revealed its authoritarian and criminal nature, ordering regular Army and Special Forces to violently curb peaceful protest in streets of Yerevan.

The tensions started with the presidential election on Feb. 19, the fifth since Armenia gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It pitted a political insider, the current prime minister and the close ally of the current President Robert Kocharyan, Serge Sargsyan, against Levon Ter-Petrossian, a prominent politician who was the country’s first elected president and who, according to unbiased and independent exit polls, has won the elections.

While Mr. Ter-Petrossian, put up a real opposition with an assertive campaign, the rest of the election conformed completely to the old Soviet standards; voting lists were artificially extended, votes were bought, voters intimidated, television coverage was embarrassingly skewed, big men in large cars bossed vote counters. As a result, the party in power stayed in power, with 52 percent of the vote.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which deployed about 350 observers, concluded that 16 percent of the count was “bad” or “very bad.” At one polling station, a quarter of all ballots were declared invalid. In another, all but one of 1,449 voters in a set of polling stations was for Mr. Sargsyan. Addressing the recommendations of international observers and popular protests on the results of the elections the State Election Authorities have conducted recount completely in accordance with orders received from the current authorities.

Since 20th of February the majority of people of Armenia, has been expressing its protest and revolt against the officially announced results of presidential elections by organizing peaceful gatherings, rallies, hunger strikes and non-stop demonstration in Yerevan. On 1st of March at 06:30 a.m. Special Forces violently dispersed several thousands of peaceful protesters on the Freedom Square of Yerevan. As eyewitnesses are reporting two protesters were killed by Special Forces, many of protesters were severely beaten; some opposition leaders were arrested and charged with irrelevant criminal cases. The leader of opposition, the main challenger for the Presidency Mr. Levon Ter-Petrossian, has been isolated by police forces and put under the house arrest.

On the same day about 250 000 thousands of protestors, including women, teenagers and elderly from different circles of the society, gathered on the square in front of French, Italian and Russian Embassies and the City Council. People were seeking the support of international democratic communities in their fight for justice. Regrouping later in response of offensive actions by police and military forces, demonstrates used buses as barricades. Some cars were set on fire. Lootings, which were reported by official sources and attributed to opposition, in fact were initiated by Governmental Special Forces, which is thoroughly documented by different eyewitnesses and reporters.
Around 22:00 the Special Forces and regular Army troops, which were deployed around the demonstration venue, attacked the people using tracer bullets and live cartridge, tear-gas, heavy military vehicles.

As the result of clashes 8 persons are reported dead by official structures. About 130 persons are injured and hospitalized. According to the information received from families the death toll is much higher. At the same time Authorities, in their attempt to hide the killing of two protesters during the seizure of Freedom Square, put their names in the list of people who were killed during the evening events. For hiding the real causes of death authorities are refusing to give bodies of victims to their families.

“Addressing” the violence initiated by the government the current President Mr. R. Kocharian has declared the State of Emergency in Yerevan and used this opportunity for the arrests and repressions against political opposition members, as well as for imposing restrictions on basic human rights and freedoms of the people of Armenia in a scale that reminds years of Joseph Stalin rule.

About 300 persons are already arrested; some relatives of Mr. Levon Ter-Petrossian, irrelevant to their occupation, are amongst them. All above mentioned is factually correct and can be easily proved.
