1. Stop the killing & execution of innocent Syrians in Syria!

Over 60,000 deaths have occurred in Syria since the first and peaceful protests against President Assad began. In addition, Turkey and other neighboring countries, are overfilling with fleeing refugee's who do not want to die in Syria.

Hundreds of thousands of Syrian's have fled the bloodbath in Syria. Children lay dead on the Syrian's streets, women are being raped, and men are being tortured by the Assad regime.

2. Withdraw all Western Troops from Afghanistan

The war in Afghanistan costs thousands of lives and trillions of dollars in defense of a corrupt and unpopular regime, one that is entirely dependent on Western troops and aid.

The war has inflamed Muslim opinion and failed to make Europe or the United States safer. Morality is undermined by recent NATO claims of no “confirmed” civilian casualties.

3. Bring Home Our Troops

As a result of the news of more casualties in Afghanistan I want Julia Gillard to bring our troops home asap!! I think that our position and our presence there is no longer sustainable and that the ramifications for not only our soldiers, but there families, is totally underestimated, and that it is now a moral issue.

How can Julia Gillard continue our commitment there when the other coalition countries are withdrawing theirs? What is underlying this decision? Who is going to win in this situation? Certainly not the children whose lives will be effected by the PTSD that they will live with, for the rest of their lives.

These soldiers presently in Afghanistan are unwittingly participating in a game of Russian roulette and this is not fair on them, or their families. You are a mother ... put yourself in this position please and imagine for a minute how this must feel ... you are also a daughter ....again put yourself in this position and imagine how it must feel to have your father or mother on a mission in a country where they are, on a daily basis, wondering if they will become the next target!!!

PLEASE PLEASE do what it takes to return our troops home before more are killed in a war that is no longer
our concern and our presence can no longer be justified.

5. Prevent Afghan Torture, Enforce Leahy Law

A recent United Nations report suggests that the United States and NATO allies are outsourcing torture and human rights violations in Afghanistan. The report concludes that there is a continuing pattern and practice of “systematic” torture in spite of repeated efforts at reform. (UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, October 2011)

Current US policy violates the Leahy Amendment to the Foreign Appropriations Act and Defense Appropriations Act (Sec. 563, P.L. 106-429 and Sec. 8092, P.L. 106-259, 2001).

6. No U.S. Escalation in Pakistan

The September 22 testimony of Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, may well “pave the way… to new unilateral military actions inside Pakistan,” including more drone strikes and, “even cross border raids into Pakistan to root out insurgents from their havens.” (New York Times, September 22-23, 2011)

After Mullen’s testimony, the Heritage Foundation immediately called for aggressive military and diplomatic escalation. (Christian Science Monitor, September 26, 2011) House Republicans are pushing an open-ended authorization for war against any insurgents anywhere in the world “associated” with the Taliban or Al Qaeda.

Enough is enough. Escalation in Pakistan is not in the national security interest of the United States. Already our drone attacks have provoked two terrorist near misses against American civilians, one at the Detroit airport on Christmas Day 2009 and another at Times Square on May 1, 2010. It is not in the economic interest of the United States; we cannot afford another trillion-dollar war. It is not in the moral interest of the United States; the drone attacks kill innocent people and inflame millions of Pakistanis against America.

The military pursuit of terrorist sanctuaries, first in Iraq and then in Afghanistan, has left behind thousands dead and wounded and only pushed the sanctuaries to new locations. Each escalation begets another. Besides Pakistan, our government is pursuing undeclared air wars against terrorist cells with drone attacks in Somalia and Yemen. (Washington Post, September 20, 2011)

It makes no sense to escalate attacks against the Pakistan sanctuaries of the Afghan Taliban while the US ends its combat role, gradually withdraws from Afghanistan, and supports a power-sharing arrangement with all parties. It is irrational to bomb the Taliban’s sanctuaries while inviting them to the peace table. A genuine diplomatic settlement requires a phased ending of the drone attacks as US troops phase out their role in Afghanistan.

Sending in ground troops backed by air power is as foolish as President Nixon’s 1970 invasion of Cambodia allegedly to wipe out Vietcong sanctuaries.

8. Honour our fallen SASR soldiers

The leaders of the Returned and Services League (RSL) have described Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) war widows, whose husbands' were killed in the line of duty, and want their dead husbands' names inscribed on the Western Australian State War Memorial at Kings Park, Perth as an 'interest group' and refuse to honour our fallen.

A bureaucratic battle has ensued where the RSL may decide at their State Congress on 26 November 2011, whether to change the existing 80-year-old protocol that says only servicemen and women who were born or enlisted in WA can be added to the war memorial. The protocol also says that names can only be added to the memorial at the end of a conflict, a stipulation that puts in limbo Diggers who served in conflicts like Afghanistan and Iraq where hostilities have no clear end.

One of our brave war widows has said: 'The SAS, unlike most regiments, they stay here. When you join the SAS you stay in the SAS and the families stay here and they become part of the local community. We are a part of WA'.

Young Diggers and the SAS Association believe the RSL's decision is a 'cop out' and the widows now have to wait at least another eight months for the issue to be resolved, if at all, because the RSL may not agree to change their protocol.

9. Stop Genocide of Pashtuns in Pakistan

The horrifying video reported by Jane Perlez in an article of New York Times on September 29, 2010, showing Pakistan Army officers mass-killing six innocent blind-folded young men with their hands tied-back, has shocked the world.

The way the Pakistani soldiers shot and killed the young men some of them as young as 14 years and then shooting at short range on those who were still alive and wounded, to finish them, dwarfs the atrocities committed by chetnik Serbs in Bosnia & Herzegovina. http://observers.france24.com/content/20101025-pakistan-s...

“A Pakistani intelligence official, who did not want to be identified discussing the issue, said he had seen other such videos and heard reports of executions larger than the one in the video”, the report goes on to says. Pakistani Military has now embarked on treating the Pashtuns the same way they used to treat Bengalis before 1971 partition. The same treatment of mass-killings both by the Military and Jamat-e-Islami in those days is repeated in Pashtun Areas now. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA and Karachi are red with Pashtun Blood. Since, 2004, more than 600 schools have been destroyed by these terrorists which means that our area is quickly drifting towards a stone-age-era. Most of the prominent elders, journalists, educationists and human rights activists have been killed by both Pakistani Military and Taliban. The Pashtun culture and tradition of Pakhtunwali is in danger of extinction. More than 1500 Maliks (prominent elders) have been killed in FATA, as confirmed by independent sources. Pashtun nationalism is on rise in retaliation to the atrocities committed by Saudi-funded Taliban and the Pakistani Military. I request all the Pashtuns to stand against these atrocities and protect our centuries old traditions of Pakhtunwali which are in danger due to continuous onslaught of Talibans and Pakistani Military.

Some reports, particularly from Waziristan, that the State Department was reviewing were increasingly specific and credible, a senior US Administration official is reported to have said. If proper action is not taken in time by International Community, the 3000-10000 prisoners rounded up by Pakistan Army during their fake operations against insurgents, can also be killed extra-judicially by Army in the same pattern.

In my Article titled “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is burning”, published on August 26, 2010, a detailed description of the situation is made. Mass graves discovered at different locations in Swat as confirmed by Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Amnesty International (AI) and Human Rights Watch (HRW): reminds of the Serb genocide of 1995 in the city of Srebrenica in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Many more undiscovered Mass-graves are waiting to be unearthed, if and when International Human Rights Organizations will be allowed to enter FATA. The magnitude and scale of torture, killing and forced disappearances by Military Establishment of Pakistan dwarfs the Chilean Dictator, General Augusto Pinochet.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan is powerless, as its orders to produce missing persons before the court for trial are thrown into dustbin by Military Establishment. Credible media reports suggest that some 2,500 people were in detention in the first half of 2010…the numbers subjected to enforced disappearances could be much higher. These detainees are not held under any clear legal framework under Pakistan’s law, a report by Amnesty International published in July this year, confirms. Hundreds of thousands of FATA’s nearly four million residents have fled the increasing brutality of the Pakistani Taleban and of the government’s military response.

We Pashtuns of Pakistan request the International Community to help try all the responsible including the Army high Command who ordered the killings of civilians, in the International Criminal Court. If the Serbs who committed genocide are brought to Hague to face justice then why Pakistan Army Generals cannot be tried in Hague? What hinders International Community from bringing these clean-shaved uniformed Taliban to Hague to try them for crimes against humanity and genocide? If these Generals are above the law? Is the International Justice system selective? Ample evidence is there to prove that, as different International Human rights Organizations like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan have investigated these atrocities and have presented the evidence in their respective reports.

<< Reza Yosefi, is a refugee with no nationality and long time resident of Sheffield. >>

My name is Reza Yosefi, I'm 20 years old. I will be forcibly deported to Afghanistan on the 16th March 2011 even though I have no knowledge of Afghanistan and no family or friends there. I have been a refugee all my life.

I grew up in Iran as the son of illegal Afghani refugees. I wanted to go school at 14, but was not allowed to attend. I wanted to work, but when I tried, I was arrested and badly beaten by the police.

At the age of 15, on fear of deportation I was sent to England to try to find a safe place where I could grow up. It took around 7 months to get here and I was often hungry and afraid. At 18 I was refused indefinite leave to remain and now, at 20, I am homeless, have no benefits and I am not allowed to work.

My situation is desperate. Now I am being deported. Please help me to stay in England. I want to study and work and live a normal life. I have friends in Sheffield and have started to make a life of my own here, please help me to continue living here in safety.

With thanks, Reza Yosefi.

15. A Petition Against Four More Years of War

We object to the United States proposal for Afghanistan being presented this week to NATO ministers.

It is not a peace plan. It is a plan for four more years of combat by US and NATO forces.

It is not a plan for US or Western troop withdrawals but for further occupation. It is a proposal to gradually lessen Western casualties and lessen Western visibility while transitioning to Western-financed, Western-armed, and Western-advised Afghan army combat in a civil conflict. It is a plan for long-term Western military bases.

It is not a plan to stop al Qaeda or terrorists from attacking Western targets. There are virtually no al Qaeda left in Afghanistan. The most recent terrorist attacks on America have been inspired by our deepening wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In seeking to save our military reputation, we all but assure future threats against Western targets. CIA officials even describe Yemen’s al Qaeda cell as more dangerous than al Qaeda in Pakistan. [NYT, Oct. 18, 2010]

It pre-empts the Administration’s own proposal for a full “review” of Afghan policy in December. The timing instead is aimed at shoring up a faltering Western alliance.

The central proposal--to increase the scale of the Afghan army and police in order to prop up a corrupt Kabul regime--will never work without a parallel cease-fire, deep institutional reform, enforceable human rights, and peace-keeping arrangements with leadership by neutral countries.

The current expenditure of over $100 billion American dollars per year for Afghanistan could be spent on medical care for 15 million veterans, or 15 million college scholarships, or 1.8 million new teachers, or 72 million installations of renewable energy for American homes.

16. Support a fair hearing for Australian soldiers - stop the un-Australian behaviour

Currently, there is a lot of angst among military and ex-military circles regarding the upcoming court case of several soldiers and their actions in Afghanistan.

They have been charged with several offences regarding a raid on a village in Afghanistan.

I believe the calls for the charges to be dropped, personal attacks on military law personnel and the procedures being followed should be stopped.

It is un-Australian to not allow the soldiers a fair-go, a chance for a fair hearing and also the knowledge for all Australians and the countries in which our soldiers operate that our soldiers adhere and obey strict orders for the treatment of civilians and the rules for when they can and cannot open fire.

Siamo in guerra e i nostri soldati muoiono. Siamo in guerra e i nostri soldati uccidono. Siamo in guerra e i nostri alleati fanno strage di civili e commettono abusi contro i diritti umani.

In nome di cosa ? Perché siamo ancora in Afghanistan nonostante tutto ciò ?

26. Inform the Canadian Public Regarding the Shortcomings of Adopting an “Islamic Ideological Detox” Program

On Wed June 3rd, 2009, the Toronto Star published an article entitled “’Detox’ Takes Care of Radicals” by Isabel Teotonio.

The article was a brief exposition of the new “ideological detox” program created by Toronto’s Sheikh Ahmed Amiruddin of the Al Sunnah Institute. This program was designed to “heal Muslim youth who are showing signs of extremist behavior”. Composed of twelve steps, “ideological detox” is supposed to help Muslim youth steer away from a path of “Islamic extremism”. As a program that purports to utilize theological clarity and positive spirituality, Amiruddin’s “ideological detox” assumes that “Islamic extremism” is a spiritual illness that stems from theological and psychological misguidance.

Unfortunately, Teotonio’s article does not deal with two important blind-spots of this proposed “ideological detox” program:

(1) As numerous academics have studied, noted, and concluded (Robert Pape of the University of Chicago chief among them, see: Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism; NY: Random House Inc, 2006), “religious/ideological extremism”, or the resorting to violence by certain individuals, is a specific product stemming from the frustrations caused primarily by political upheavals. The chaotic suffering induced by military occupations and wars are chiefly responsible for the recruitment of individuals into organizations such as, say, al-Qaeda. The article does not note this well-established argument.

(2) This proposed program would work by having concerned individuals “red-flag” those within their community that exhibit “signs of extremism”. This procedure refers to an extremely vague methodology of identifying danger. Effectively, individuals will be “red-flagged” not for their deeds, but for expressing their thoughts. One can easily see how such a suggestion may prove intrusive upon the rights to free speech and expression that are so sacred to Canadian democracy. It is in fact an explicit replica of the Red Scare days of the 1950s, where McCarthyism indicted those who “appeared to exhibit signs of supporting communists”. Teotonio’s article does not probe critically into the implications of Amiruddin’s program. If picked up as a governing policy of sorts, this program can evolve into a damaging element within our democracy. The Canadian intelligence service CSIS has already shown interest in such a program, also espoused by Toronto-based Sheikh Mohammed Shaikh, and his respective organizations.

As one of Canada’s leading newspapers, the Toronto Star is responsible for informing the Canadian public on pertinent issues that may affect the well-being of our national security and democracy. In order to successfully excel in its responsibility as a vital cornerstone of Canadian democracy, the Toronto Star should consider critically probing the idea of endorsing a program of “ideological detox”.

29. Stop Taliban's War on Women

Since the Taliban took power in 1996, women had to wear burquas and have been beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper attire, even if this means simply not having the mesh covering in front of their eyes.

One woman was beaten to DEATH by an angry mob of fundamentalists for accidentally exposing her arm while she was driving.

Another was stoned to death for trying to leave the country with a man that was not a relative.

Some women got their fingers cut off because of putting nail polish on.

Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public without a male relative.

Professional women such as professors, translators, doctors, lawyers, artists and writers have been forced from their jobs and stuffed into their homes.

Everyone has a right to a tolerable human existence, even if they are women in a Muslim country in a part of the world that Americans do not understand.
