Petition Tag - a call to action: election 24 november 2007
To all Australians, from Fabian Dattner
I’m going to vote for the party that makes the clearest, long term commitment to Australia’s contribution to the protection of the planet. How will you choose?
Read the following carefully. If you agree, please sign and email on to friends and associates everywhere.
Last night, around the dinner table (like so many Australians I suspect) I found myself expressing my frustration and confusion about the pending election. I have come to distrust both sides of the political spectrum; I admire certain aspects of both and I detest certain aspects of both, and I trust neither Rudd nor Howard. I felt paralyzed. As the discussion evolved, I realised in my paralysis I was slipping towards voting for what was best for me and those I love; a short term selfish position.
Then somewhere in the night I had a nightmare. I was looking at the opal jewel that is Earth, from a great distance. Its incandescent beauty, hanging in black space, took my breath away. I smiled with joy. Then I realised a grey, brown smog had started to creep across its face. In a heartbeat I saw the madness of our continued impact on our impossibly rare home. I saw how finite it was, how small, and how vast empty space was.
I woke this morning with this letter in my head. You and I can make a difference now. If a minority groups, operating from self interest, can get in front of our Prime minister, surely Australians united around the single most important issue on the political landscape can be heard by both parties, forcing them to act now.
We will vote for the party that makes the most unambiguous, long term, stepped commitment to Australia’s contribution to protecting the global environment, starting in our own back yard:
- Reduction of greenhouse gases
- Protection of remnant old growth forests
- Investment in sustaining bio diversity land and marine
- Educating you, me, leaders and businesses everywhere to change now
- Showing visionary leadership themselves
If you agree, sign the attached petition. It does not force you to vote against your wishes, but it does force both parties to compete to do the best for all, rather than vying for short term, individual interests.
You have my word, that two weeks from today, 5th November, I will personally ensure this petition is presented to Howard and Rudd. I will also do what I can to ensure your growing numbers are publicized. We should not be silent on this, ever again.
We can create the future we want, rather than inherit the future we fear.
