This petition is designed to share an alternative approach with the BCTF Executive in our current negotiations with the BC government.

Our hope is that this approach will...

-Strengthen public support and awareness of current educational issues come September
-Limit the power of government to malign teachers
-Put pressure on government to settle as they will not be saving money on striking teachers
-Relieve financial hardship to BCTF members
-Continue an active stance for negotiation and a fair deal for teachers and students

It is our belief that the government's current position is to await the outcome of their Supreme Court appeal in October and therefore will not negotiate or sign any reasonable contract until after this verdict is delivered. This leaves us in a precarious position come September as many members will be facing financial hardship, parents will be anxious, and the government will likely try to use this against us to weaken union solidarity.

This is an unprecedented situation. We have the opportunity to change the course of education and our relationship with both the public and the government.

Despite your agreement or disagreement with this proposal, please forward to other BCTF members so they can have their voice too.

Thank you.

We BCTF members propose that our BCTF executive consider the follow strategy in its negotiations with the BC government.

1) lift current job action by Monday, August 25, 2014 so teachers and students may return to school.

2) continue negotiations with provincial government up to and including the date of the October BC Supreme Court appeal decision.

3) if no settlement has been negotiated prior to appeal court decision, BCTF return to members for feedback and vote on new course of action based on verdict and government's plan of action.
