In June of 2008, Villa Julie College's Board of Trustees made history by renaming our institution Stevenson University. The Board and President Kevin Manning cited the institution's vast expansion and growth as their reasons for initiating the change.
Current students and alumni of the College understand and support the school's need for University status, as it is a measurement of the institution's continued success. The decision to call the school Stevenson University, however, has not been widely accepted. For current and former students, our college was and has been a second home.
The name villa Julie is just as prominent in the memories we have made as the campus itself-- it's on the resumes that helped alumni find first jobs, it's on the letters of acceptance sent to current students, it's a sticker on the bumpers of countless cars. In changing the name of our school so drastically, we feel that we have been alienated from one of the most important organizations in our lives.
We understand and respect the school's need for University status, but we do not support the decision to remove the Villa Julie name.
The institution to which we are so strongly connected should, in our opinions, be able to maintain some semblance of its former identity.
Therefore, it is with the utmost respect that we, the undersigned, call on the Board of Trustees to rename Stevenson University Villa Julie University.
