Target:
Viacom Inc.
Region:
United States of America

Viacoms assets include Viacom International, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, Republic Pictures, MTV Films, Nickelodeon Movies, Go Fish Pictures in film, and Comedy Central, Logo, BET, Spike, TV Land, Nick at Nite, Nickelodeon, Noggin, The N, Nick Jr., TEENick, MTV, VH1, MTV2, CMT, MHD in television.

In June of 2005 the original Viacom split into two publicly traded companies. It basically split into the CBS networks, which Viacom no longer has, and the MTV type networks. Viacom chose to split with CBS becuase they though that it was slowing the growth of the MTV networks.

The division was also partly due to the rivalry between Leslie Moonves, head of CBS, and Tom Freston, head of MTV. The MTV networks show more controversial and edgy programs than the CBS networks do.

The target audience for MTV is teens, where CBS has a broader range for their audience. Most of MTV's programs involve alot of sex, drinking, etc. and these programs are targeted at teenagers.

We, the undersigned, call on Viacom to cut off its affiliation with MTV and BET networks. These networks show programs that no one should be watching, but especially children. These shows like Real World and Tila Tequila target young teens as their audience. They are teaching these kids improper morals and irresponsible behavior.

The music videos that are shown on these networks are innapropriate as well. They teach kids to disrespect women, that drugs are cool and a great way to make money, and use very explicit language. It gives them a false view of the lifestyle of a drug dealer or gang member.

I suggest that Viacom cuts off its affiliation with these networks and goes back with the CBS networks. CBS has at least some educational and family oriented programming instead of none like MTV and BET.

If Viacom is concerned with what programming is best for their viewers, then they should cut off ties with these networks. If they only care about making money the fastest way then they will probably stay with them.

Hopefully this petition will open up Viacom's eyes to what is best for its viewers.
