In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet.

Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.

TOMS business plan is simple; one for one. For every pair of shoes purchased, a pair is given away to a child in need. The shoes are delivered during "Shoe Drops" where TOMS employees and volunteers personally deliver TOMS shoes to villages in third world countries. During September 2010, while in Argentina, TOMS gave away the 1,000,000th pair of shoes!!!

Why Shoes?

Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:

•A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.

•Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.

•Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential.

Podoconiosis: a debilitating and disfiguring disease. Also known as "Mossy Foot", podoconiosis is a form of elephantiasis that affects the lymphatic system of the lower legs. It is a soil-trasmitted disease caused by walking in silica-rich soil. This causes one's feet to swell along with many other health implications. The company's goal is not only to give shoes, but also to educate others on the importance of wearing shoes.

To Whom This May Concern,

We, the undersigned, are writing to you to appeal the addition of TOMS shoes, the black unisex canvas slip-on with a sturdy sole, to the current Molloy dress code.

For every pair of TOMS purchases, TOMS will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need. Children without shoes could possibly miss out on a better education because shoes are often mandatory in school dress codes.

Purchasing TOMS shoes is a way for everyone to get involved and reach out to help those less fortunate. We respectfully petition the consideration of adding TOMS Shoes to the Molloy dress code.

Sincerely,
the students of Archbishop Molloy High School
