Teachers in crisis:
teachers nationwide are under so much stress from unbearable and unsustainable workloads, that they are literally bursting into tears in schools in front of their colleagues. Education trusts are paying layers of managers ridiculous salaries to come up with ever more complex schemes to push them up the league tables, but with no regard for the extra work, the savage hours, and the catastrophic health effects - both mental and physical - this is having on the people at the chalk face. When this amount of work is expected of anyone, and they have to use increasing amounts of their unpaid time to be able to achieve the demanded results - eventually to the point where they have NO free time of their own - something has to give. Right now, that is the morale and the health of thousands of dedicated and talented teachers.
We call upon the government, the Minister for Education, Ofsted, local authorities, and the Ombudsman to bring a halt to the excesses of out-of-control education trusts and senior management, to protect the well-being of their most valuable asset: teachers, and to stop this equivalent of modern slavery that they currently appear to sanction. Teachers have a right to work the hours for which they are paid, and not double or treble those hours for the same pay. Teachers have a right to fundamental protections from exploitation, and what amounts currently to forced labour of the most abhorrent kind. Stop the gang-masters of education from brutalising teachers.
