Many television viewers were shocked and saddened to witness the ultimate in gratuitous television violence. CBS' "Survivor" has capitalized upon the brutal slaughter of a pig on camera by one of the show's contestants for the sake of television ratings.

That the pig suffered greatly is unquestionable --- the pig's death by repeated, violent stabbing violates every civilized country's standard for humane slaughter. By arranging this cruel act, or allowing it to happen, CBS has demonstrated that it is willing to deliberately depart from society's regard for the humane treatment of animals as expressed in law --- all for ratings!

We oppose the brutal killing of a pig on the February 15th episode of "Survivor." Further, we urge the producers and CBS-TV to ensure that no such gratuitous killings occur in "Survivor III."
