MAGGIE L. WALKER MUST STAND PROUD IN HER GLORY - WITHOUT A TREE!

Maggie L. Walker devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment & educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, community organizer and leader, and co-founder of the Richmond NAACP, her legacy has always served as an inspiration of pride. She exemplifies the cultural heritage and values of Jackson Ward's distinguished African American community: dignity, perseverance, resilience, self-determination, and collective action.

Her grace & valor stand high among notable black Richmonders of her era: John Mitchell, Jr., Rosa Dixon Bowser, Giles Jackson, Dr. Sarah Jones, W.W. Browne, W.M.T. Forrester, Dr. Zenobia Gilpin, Benjamin A. Graves, Albert V. Norrell, and all who represented service above self, courage under fire, racial uplift and pride during the segregated Jim Crow era in Richmond.

As a gateway to Jackson Ward, the site at Adams, Broad and Brook Road provides an ideal plaza for her statue. The tree must be removed to provide a 360 degree lighted presentation and to ensure and sustain the statue from potential underground damage.

Her representation must not be overshadowed by a tree. She was an ardent supporter of the anti-lynching movement. She must not be located under a tree like “strange fruit.”

To place Mrs. Walker’s likeness under a tree is an insult to women, the black community, the banking community and all people who have a sense of fairness. Allow engineers, designers, and the artist to do their best work to represent Maggie L. Walker in full glory - without a tree!
