On July 21, 2010 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, of California nominated Hon. Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye, an Associate Justice of the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District in Sacramento as the next Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court to succeed Chief Justice Ronald George, who is retiring on January 3, 2011.
Justice Cantil-Sakauye, 50y a Sacramento California native of Filipino and Portuguese ancestry was appointed to the Sacramento Municipal Court by Governor George Deukmejian when she was thirty years old. Later, she was appointed by Governor Pete Wilson to the Sacramento Superior Court and in 2005 Governor Schwarzenegger appointed her to the Court of Appeal.
Justice Cantil-Sakauye needs to be confirmed by the three-member Commission on Judicial Appointments before her name is placed on the November 2010 ballot for voters' approval and if successfully chosen by the electorate, a confirmation hearing by the three member California Bar panel will follow before she becomes eligible to serve a 12-year term as the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court
Justice Cantil-Sakauye is married to Lt. Mark Sakauye of the Sacramento Police Department. They have two daughters, Hana and Clair
We, the undersigned submit this Petition to support Hon Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye at the California Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings with:
1) The California Commission on Judicial Appointment on August 25, 2010 10am @ the Supreme Court Courtroon State Building 350 McAllister St. San Francisco, California.
2) The California Bar Panel if after a successful Retention Vote in the California November 2010 General Election.
We, the undersigned believe that Justice Cantil- Sakauye is most deserving of the nomination because of her distinguished service in the judiciary when she rose from the ranks serving from the Municipal Court to the Superior Court, then to the Court of Appeal. She is a known moderate Republican and a skilled administrator in the California Judicial Council which she will run as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
We, the undersigned urge the California Commission on Judicial Appointment and the California Bar Panel to confirm the nomination of Justice Tani Gorre Cantil Sakauye to the position of the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court.
