In spite of programmes put in place, 1 in 3 diabetics are still unaware that their condition puts them at increased risk of lower limb amputation. Complications of diabetic foot cost the NHS about £600m every year, of which £252m is for amputations, and it is estimated that up to 85% of these amputations are preventable. More emphasis must be placed on educating diabetics about taking care of their feet.

We call for the unofficial “Foot Health Friday” to become a permanent fixture on the annual diabetic calendar to increase awareness of diabetic foot complications.

We, the undersigned, call for an increased focus on the issue of foot health for diabetics by the NHS and government organisations around the world.
