Every state of Australia bar Western Australia has recognised the right for mothers to breastfeed in public without being discriminated against (told to move to a more private place, such as public toilets etc.), by introducing a specific breastfeeding law under the Discrimination Act. Premier Colin Barnett had ruled out introducing laws (in April 2009) saying common sense and courtesy was the answer. However mothers in this day and age are still being approached in public and told 'can you not do that here'.

Legislation for this law (in WA) has already passed through the Legislative Assembly (November 2009) and could have been granted within a matter of minutes by the Legislative Council - yet they did not and still have not passed it.

To the Honourable the Speaker and the Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled.

We, the undersigned, say Western Australia needs to join the rest of Australia and pass specific Breastfeeding Legislation under the Discrimination Act which will protect from discrimination mothers who wish to breastfeed in a public place.

Now we ask the Western Australian Legislative Council to pass the Breastfeeding laws as set out by the Western Australian Legislative Assembly in 2009.
