Support and Fairness for Dean/Coach Earnest Sutton

On July 2nd, parents, students, and citizens of Hillcrest High School community came out in large numbers and voiced our support of Dean/Coach Earnest Sutton.

There were close to 200 people and about 60-70 of those in attendance wanted to speak on behalf of Dean/Coach Sutton. However, Mr. Kirkton, District 228 School Board President, announced that he would have to limit the number of speakers to a time frame and because of that only 29 people were allowed to speak. As stated, a number of times on that evening, Dean Sutton has been a tremendous Dean, Coach, mentor, and leader in the Hillcrest community and District 228 for over 20 years.

We know that Dean/Coach Earnest Sutton made a mistake, for which he has taken full responsibility. He also came to his superiors and asked for help through the Employee Assistance Program. He was also honest and forthcoming when he was asked about the situation.

Despite all of this the Superintendent, Dr. Bill Kendall, recommended termination for Dean/Coach Earnest Sutton. The District 228 School Board decided to suspend Dean/Coach Earnest Sutton from his Dean position for 1-year and remove him from his position as Head Coach.

This all despite the request of parents, citizens, and supporters to have Dean/Coach Earnest Sutton remain as a Dean, Coach, leader, and, mentor for our students.

We find this action by the School Board of District 228 to lack compassion, be harsh, & unfair.
