The A5 or Watling Street in Warwickshire is part of a road network that is more than 2000 years old. Clearly, when constructed , it was never intended to have the volume of traffic that uses it and the peripheral roads we have today.

The result of having an over burdened road network are issues around safety , predominantly, and the environment. We cannot expect this road network to keep taking and taking extra volume via urban regeneration, and new dwellings without addressing this issue.

A new programme of growth is planned for the area , via MIRA, a technological institution that is bringing 2500 new jobs to the area. However, with that 2500 new jobs, comes 2500 new cars. This coupled with other projects along the A5 mean that the road will become an even bigger safety and environmental hazard.

We welcome regeneration, but the changes to the A5 planned by MIRA do not address the issue , and are a cheap attempt to meet their own needs at the expenses of the local community. They have disregarded a previously agreed plan that took years of planning and consultation by the Highways agency , and have now proposed creating even more bottle necks at junctions.

There have been 3 fatalities on the A5 this year, let there be no more.

We the undersigned , call on the Secretary of State to lodge a public inquiry into safety on the A5 sand its peripheral roads to ensure safety and the environment are not compromised at the expense of much needed growth.
