Stop the taxpayer-funding of trade unions in Tameside

Petition published by The TaxPayers' Alliance on Aug 30, 2011
324 Signatures
Target: Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council

Petition Background (Preamble):

During the last financial year, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council funded the work of trade unions with £336,718 of taxpayers' money. This was a 48% increase on the amount paid in the previous year. The people in receipt of this money are all employees of the council, paid by us to work for us, but instead work for their union.

Petition:

We, the undersigned, believe that, at a time when Tameside Council is cutting local services, it is inappropriate for it to use taxpayers’ money to fund trade union organisers.

Trade unions should pay for their representatives out of money they receive in subscriptions from their members, and we call upon the leadership of Tameside Council to immediately abolish the taxpayer funding of trade unions.
