This law is a great law except, one small problem. The law is void if any of the employees involved attains a financial interest.

The commissioners court of a county as well as the sheriff of a county both could work together in private to approve a contract with a private facility, in turn, their financial interests being hidden from the public. Another problem is inmates in private facilities don't gain enough access to healthcare, therapy and concealing.

Private facilities are prone to more violence, rape, abuse and suicide. The main focus for the owners of the private prisons is on getting the maximum amount of inmates to gain profit, no matter the conditions.

I support HB 1714 filled in the Texas House of Representatives that Representative Harold Dutton filed but was not passed.

This bill would have stopped the privatizations of prisons in Texas and needs to be reconsidered.

The Stop the Privatization of Texas Prisons petition to Texas House of Representatives was written by Ruzina Muhammad and is in the category Civil Rights at GoPetition.
