On January 16, 2008, the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) unilaterally abrogated the ceasefire agreement with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that was in effect since 2002.
Thereafter, the GOSL commenced an aggressive military campaign against LTTE in the North and East of Sri Lanka. Since hostilities began, the Sri Lankan government has systematically also targeted Tamil civilians, their properties and civil infrastructure. Schools, hospitals, commerce centres, temples and churches. All these have become the targets of Sri Lanka’s indiscriminate bombing campaigns.
The Sri Lankan government’s decision to expel international and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from providing relief to more than half-a-million Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) have created a humanitarian crisis that needs urgent intervention. The embargo on food, medicine and tents by the Sri Lankan government has worsened their plight.
The GOSL has denied access to all local and foreign media. The few media that are attempting to bring the plight of Tamils in Northern Sri Lanka are either killed, intimidated or warned with death.
The International Community, especially Christians, have failed to act over the last 5 months, resulting in the injury of 20,000 and the deaths of over 10,000 civilians. The Christian community must immediately invoke the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and intervene in Sri Lanka to stop the genoicde of the Tamil civilians.
The heavy shelling and arial bombardment that the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) claimed to have ended over two weeks ago has continued today, resulting in the death of over 3200 civilians and thousands more injured. Those injured are expected to die due to a lack of medical facilities, medicine, and medical personal due to restrictions and embarogos imposed by the GoSL.
The Christian community had failed to act against the holocaust. We do not want to make the same mistake now.
