Ill treatment of strays is very rampant in certain states of India, particularly Kerala. People take a great delight in hurting these animals, who are totally minding their own business. I have personally witnessed during festive seasons some stray dogs with fire crackers tied to their tails yelping and screaming while the on-lookers keep cheering. Even children.

Similarly pouring scalding hot water on cats is a favorite pastime of Malayali house wives. The poor kittens usually dumped on the street by owners themselves sometimes wander into neighboring houses to this fate. Young crows who have fallen out of their cages are strung up alive.
