There are currently 6 nuclear power stations in operation around the UK, with a further 2 planned in the near future. The new stations are proposed for Hinkley Point in Somerset and Sizewell in Suffolk.

Our concerns are that these developments, which will be undertaken by the French company, EDF, who bought British Energy in 2009, has a poor safety record.

Also, since the earthquake in Japan, where a nuclear power plant was badly damaged, nuclear energy has proved to be far too hazardous.

We the undersigned call on DEFRA, the department of the Environment, to refuse planning permission for the development of further nuclear power plants at both Hinkley Point and Sizewell.

Instead, we ask that DEFRA recommend that EDF investigate other alternative options of power generation, especially the renewables option.

We present this petition on the grounds of our concern for the safety of the inhabitants in the nearby towns and villages and also for the protection of the environment generally.
