The shale gas industry has been shown to cause irreversible damage to the environment by toxifying the air, water and soil.
It compromises public health as studies have shown it to cause cancer, respiratory problems, congenital heart defects and low birth weights in infants.
Further safety issues are due to the possible threat of well pad fires and explosions.
Well water contamination is also a serious related problem with this industry. Communities are left with no potable water and water unfit to bathe or shower in.
Furthermore, the value of property near fracking sites is greatly reduced due to the aforementioned danger of possible well pad explosions and the earthquake and tremor activity that has been observed at these fracking sites. For these reasons, this industry is surely an unwise path for our picture province to take.
We the undersigned call on the New Brunswick government to enact a moratorium and /or outright ban on the proposed four wellpads to be started up in Penobsquis and on future shale gas hydraulic fracking projects in the province.
There is much documented evidence about the fracking industry to demonstrate its deeply negative impact on any community that has been unfortunate enough to be chosen as a site for this industry.
Say no to cracking and protect our children's and grand children's future health and safety. Clean air, water and a safe environment should be every Canadians' right.
