Governor Pearce said “most of the oil and gas jobs in southeast New Mexico are at risk” if the fish and wildlife agency decides to give the lizard federal protection. Pearce has accepted nearly $1.2 million from oil and gas interests.
The dunes sagebrush lizard is in danger of extinction throughout its entire range and faces significant threats due to oil and gas activities and herbicides.
The lizard has been affected by habitat loss and fragmentation from oil and gas development due to the removal of shinnery oak and the building of roads and pads, pipelines and power lines.
