The Ripon Unified School District is planning to erect a 65 foot Clearwire microwave tower on the grounds of Weston Elementary School in order to collect rental fee revenue for the school district. The tower is going through the approval process, but final plans have yet to be approved by the school board.

Why you will be affected:

• Recent studies indicate that people who live near cell phone or microwave towers have higher rates of cancer.

• Studies of people who live near or attend schools next to microwave towers indicate they suffer from headaches, insomnia, fatigue, nausea, dizziness.

• The tower may decrease your home’s property value.

Susan Clarke, director of the Environmental Health Advocacy League notes “research indicates that short-term neurological effects can occur around wireless towers long before cancers that may take up to 15 years to develop. These disorders are chiefly the result of decreased melatonin production, which is linked to disturbances in concentration—such as attention deficit disorder—sleep disorders and cognitive impairments.”

The American Cancer Society's web site says that because the technology is still relatively new, "we do not yet have full information on health effects.''

The World Health Organization says about 3 out of every 100 people are electrosensitive, which means they suffer ill effects when exposed to electromagnetic radiation. So at Weston, when that tower goes up, there will be at least fifteen students experiencing overt symptoms. They may be experiencing more serious diseases, like cancer, several years down the road.

Studies show how dangerous cell phones are for children because their skulls are thinner than adults’ skulls. But adults have a choice as to when or whether they or their children use cell phones. The students at Weston won’t have any choice about being exposed to the constant bombardment of radiation from this tower.

Why are increasing cell phone towers so concerning?

“What most people, including experts, fail to understand is that the danger….is not from the magnetic radiation or the microwave carrier wave from which typical SAR ratings are given on phones. Unless you have massive exposures like you might expect in a microwave oven, these thermal effects are insignificant.

Nearly all the biological damage comes from the modulated signals that are carried ON the carrier microwave. These modulated information-carrying radio waves resonate in biological frequencies of a few to a few hundred cycles per second, and can stimulate your vibrational cellular receptors causing a whole cascade of pathological consequences that can culminate in fatigue, anxiety and ultimately cancers.

Again, this is a very serious concern because, unless you live in an isolated rural setting, you are probably being exposed to these radio-waves day-in and day-out -- whether or not you even own or use a cell phone.

Numerous studies have linked exposure to information-carrying radio waves to health problems, but you may not realize that your symptoms are related to these radio frequencies because they could easily be attributed to other causes as well. “

In short, the safety of microwave towers has not been proven which makes schools inappropriate places for their location. Don’t let our children be the guinea pigs in this experiment.

Dear Ripon Unified School District Board of Trustees:

We, the undersigned, are opposed to the installation of a ClearWire wireless transmission tower on the grounds of Weston Elementary School.

There is no need for ClearWire to put antennae in this area, since wireless Internet is not necessary. There is also the possibility that it could serve as a host for additional microwave uses and other commercial applications.

Supreme-Court-admissible scientific studies, as well as reports from other neighborhoods where such antenna have been installed, indicate that they are a health hazard, particularly to children, the elderly, and persons with prior conditions adversely affected by such unnatural microwave radiation as ClearWire intends to broadcast.

For these reasons we urge that the proposal by ClearWire to locate a transmission tower on the grounds of Weston Elementary School be denied by the Ripon Unified School District Board of Trustees.
