Governor Corbett’s budget proposal contains deep cuts to support for those with intellectual disabilities, mental health conditions, and addictions.
These cuts eliminate General Assistance, which provides an average monthly benefit of $205 per recipient and gives a lifeline to victims of domestic abuse, people caring for a non-related child, and adults in addictions treatment. General Assistance PREVENTS costly outcomes like foster care, homelessness and incarceration. Someone – whether local or state governments – will be forced to provide direct services if providers cannot. The proposed budget cuts will force private sector job losses even as governments are forced to provide additional services.
There is plenty you can do to stop Corbett’s budget cuts dead in their tracks. The Legislature can ensure full and fair funding for direct care services, but they need to hear from you first.
We need to let everyone know that Governor Corbett’s budget cuts will reduce services, cut jobs, and harm the people who most need support.
We, the undersigned, call on Governor Corbett to Reconsider the cuts to General Assistance.
