As truly horrific as it is, the vast majority of animal shelters are kill shelters. Many have 60-day or 90-day adoption policies, meaning if homes aren't found in that time, the animals get injected with a lethal substance.
Some people say it's necessary in order to keep the population of stray animals under control, but this is a poor reason because many no-kill shelters are just as functional. They employ different strategies, like discounted adoption days, or bonuses for adopting pets that have been there a long time.
Imagine a scenario where a 2-month-old calico kitten had been in a shelter for three months and then was sentenced to death because his time was up. He wouldn't even be half a year old. Any reasonable person can see how wrong that is.
The senseless deaths of thousands upon thousands of innocent kittens, cats, puppies, dogs, and other animals needs to stop right now.
We, the undersigned, call on you, the members of the Canadian government, to pass a law that would make it illegal and criminally punishable to euthanize a pet for any non-medical reason whatsoever.
