As the Santa Barbara City’s web site says:
"Santa Barbara is a major center of art on the West Coast. The Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show operates successfully because so many artists and art lovers have converged here to take advantage of the concentration of motivating and supporting art activities in this beautiful location."
Unfortunately greed and corruption are ruining this wonderful event. It has become vendors intent on profit instead of artists and crafts people intent on sharing their creations. The spots in our city park are being used as investments by speculators and shop keepers. It is becoming static, stale and almost a simple flee market.
But it is EASY and FREE to Fix!
Two simple changes will insure Artists and Crafts people will still have a place here to amaze and delight us. Santa Barbara doesn't want a flee market instead of it's great art support tradition.
We the people of Santa Barbara call upon our city government to recognize this issue and the danger it poses to the highly valued Artist and Crafts people of the community.
We ask that you immediately implement a new rule and enforce existing rules to preserve the essence of this great event.
1) No more permanently assigned spots. Spots will be assigned by lottery every week. This will end the territorialness, site speculation profiteering and add visual variety sadly missing in the boring static same thing every week it has become.
2) No more shop keepers. Enforce the rules! The work on display must be the work of the spot owner and they must spend a majority of the day with their display. No more art dealers, let them rent a shop. Only real Art and Crafts sold by real Artists and Crafts People.
