The Old Hall and the remaining parts of the original High School building were constructed in Lismore Place in 1908 and opened by the Duke of Devonshire, who had sold the land to the City Council.

The hall has been held in great affection by many generations of pupils and teachers since that time. It has far more character and atmosphere than most of the later additions to the building and remains the focus of many past pupils' memories.

It has been an integral part of the education of thousands of High School and St Aidan’s pupils. The original building, which was the first purpose built secondary school for girls in Cumberland, has played a significant role in the history of education in the Carlisle area for a century.

We, the undersigned, urge those charged with designing and constructing the new Central Academy to incorporate this attractive area into the new building.

We espouse progress, but not at the cost of destroying a well loved and well designed feature of Carlisle’s heritage.
