The Mayor has proposed closing the McKinley Beacon program - an after-school program and community center that is open 6 days a week and operates on school holidays and over the summer.

The McKinley Beacon is widely popular – with a staff of 20 serving between 100-225 children a day and reaching 1,500 children and adults a year – for the past 15 years! Their free summer program, which always has a long waiting list, serves 225 children aged 5-13 every year.

Beyond this, the McKinley Beacon program, which is run by HeartShare Human Services of New York, serves as a community facility – partnering with local groups like St. Ephrem’s and The Bay Ridge Saints to provide athletic facilities to the community at large.

We, the undersigned, urge you to fund child care and after-school programs in the Mayor's Executive Budget, so that the children of McKinley Beacon Program can continue to learn and grow.

We know that the economic recession of the past three years has made budget reductions a reality – tough choices needed to be made. That said, closing the McKinley Beacon Program will deal a devastating blow to our children and families.

We urge you to put the McKinley Beacon Program back in the City's budget.
