On Saturday, June 2, the Hanalei Farmers Market—one of Kauai's most popular tourist attractions—was discontinued with no advance notice to the 56 vendors who depend on it to make a living.

The leaders of Hale Halawai, the non-profit that runs the market and local community center, told vendors the closure was due to "unresolved parking and permit issues." They also said they were threatened with a lawsuit by unnamed individuals in the community.

Shock, tears, and anxiety filled the faces of the farmers, artisans, cultural practitioners, and food vendors who have depended on the Saturday sales for 13 years. The impact will be felt not only by the vendors, but also by locals and tourists who crowd the market every Saturday.

The board of Hale Halawai is working diligently on getting the permit modification needed. Community support is imperative. Please show your kokua by signing the petition below. It will be sent to Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Lenny Rapozo, Parks & Recreation, Planning Commission, Hale Halawai, ...

I support the continuation of the Hanalei Farmers Market and its valuable contribution to the island of Kauai.

It is one of Kauai's most popular tourist attractions, and an economic engine for the community. Its closure will hurt many families and local businesses.

Please:

1) Expedite the amendment of the current Special Use Permit and any related permits (if needed) to enable the market to resume immediately.

2) Permit market guests to park in designated area at nearby Waioli Park; and

3) If possible, please keep the market open in the interim, until these matters are resolved.
