Global warming is melting the polar bear’s habitat, the sea ice. The sea ice is a necessity for the polar bears as they need it for food and hunting, and for a place to raise their young.

Without the sea ice, the polar bear can’t hunt during the spring and summer, relying on stored body fat to survive until winter, and sometimes the body fat is not enough to sustain their immensely large body. Also, since the ice is drifting further and further apart, polar bears are forced to swim between ice floes, and they cannot swim for long distances many times, so a lot of times they drown. If we do not take action, this important species of the world will die out in the very near future along with many arctic species and most likely, the arctic ice itself.

Did you know...?

• between 2004 and 2005 the amount of arctic ice melted could cover Texas.

• polar bear population worldwide is 20,000-25,000 and the USGS (US Geological Survey) has predicted that 2/3 of the current population could disappear along with the habitat by 2050.

• Scientists have predicted that by 2050, the Arctic will be completely free of ice.

• The Department of the Interior has reported up to a 7.7% decrease in ice per decade since 1978.

• Scientists predict about a 3 foot rise in sea level by 2100, which would flood more than 22,000 square miles in the US in the states LA, TX, FL, and NC.

• 2007 had the lowest sea ice coverage in recorded history.

• Ice was gone in almost all primary polar bear habitats in August 2008 (aerial survey), melting ice could exceed records set in 2007 .

• If global warming continues without stopping, the whole polar bear population could starve off in 100 years.

• Over the past 35 years, the Arctic ice has thinned from an average thickness of 3.1 meters to 1.8 meters. From 1978, it has shrunk 6%; reducing the mass of the sea ice by about half.

We the undersigned,

Ask that you, the Secretary of the Interior, use your authority under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to limit the emission of greenhouse gases by power plants, vehicles, big corporations, or other companies.

We also ask you to place more ESA restrictions on the polar bears to help keep them alive and thriving.
