No Catholic Church existed in what we know today as Northern Westchester until Saint Patrick’s in Verplanck was founded in 1843.
St. Patricks Roman Catholic Church located at 240 11th Street in Verplanck, NY was established in 1842 when John Henry donated a parcel of land in Verplanck to Archbishop John Huges "on condition that a place of worship fro Roman catholics be erected within the space of one year." The church was founded to serve the immigrant workers at the brickyards in Verplanck.
In Feb of 1846 Father John Hackett arranged for Mr Henry to additionally donate a 100 sq ft parcel on the South side of the church as a cemetery (Churchyard).
The Churchyard cemetery served the parish for many years until 1873 when the new burial ground on Broadway came into use. The Assumption Church parish in Peekskill turned over the St Mary's cemetery on Broadway to St Patricks in 1926 as the Churchyard was being out grown. The St Mary's cemetery on Broadway was renamed St Particks Cemetery. Churchyard adjoins the new St Patricks Church(1982) containing the graves of many Irish Immigrants residing in Verplanck. It is the oldest Roman Catholic burial ground in Westchester County.
The first grave stones for the pastors Rev John Hackett and Rev Nicholsa O'Donnell were relocated along the church wall when the church was rebuilt in 1982.
As signatories to this letter we see it as imperative that His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York take immediate action to prevent this historical church from demise.
We oppose, in the strongest terms possible, the proposed closure of our historical church.
We implore His Eminence to both preserve our county's history & honor both those founding clergymen currently resting in the adjoining Churchyard and the immigrant workers (many of whom have ancestors residing in Verplanck to this day) that worked tirelessly to build our church.
