Mt. Zion Institute was founded in Winnsboro and Charleston, SC over 200 years ago, for the purpose of higher learining. The Winnsboro campus remained a school until 1991.
The current buildings were built in 1936, and are located on land that General Cornwallis's British troops camped on in the winter of 1780. The buildings consist of a three-story school, a teacherage, a gymnasium, and a beautiful 300 seat auditorium.
This property is a block and a half from our Downtown, and reusing this property will add much needed foot traffic for our Downtown merchants.
In the past, funding was not available to maintain the buildings, and it was all recently given to the Town. The Town has contracted to have it demolished, but has given a 6 month period to access the support for refurbishing and reusing the buildings. That time frame ends October 15.
Our group, "Friends of Mt. Zion Institute" is open to anyone, and meets weekly to work on fund raising efforts, and school recruitment for the buildings. We feel very confident we can come up with a plan that our Town Council members will approve of, and need your petition support.
Any financial donations for building repair would also be appreciated, and will be tax deductible. A 501 C3 is in place, and donations can be sent to:

We, the undersigned Friends of Mt. Zion Institute, local residents, merchants, property owners, alumni and attendees of Mt. Zion Institute, and historic building conservation supporters, wish to strongly recommend to the Mayor and Town Council members of the Town of Winnsboro, SC that Mt. Zion Institute should NOT be torn down, and an adaptive re-use (such as a school) should be found for the old school's buildings and campus.
