Background (Preamble):
Because we need more than one college to attend, and we don't want to lose our heritage, why the Black universities?
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has a plan to merge Mississippi University for Women into the larger Mississippi State University and to consolidate the three historically black universities into one. Barbour proposes merging Mississippi Valley State University and Alcorn State University into the larger Jackson State University.
We have had great people come from these Universities, and if it was not for these Universities we would not have as many educated people in Mississippi. For myself I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, and they did not makes it easy for me. We don't need to close any University in Mississippi.

We, the undersigned citizens of Southern Mississippi, are asking that no Universities in Mississippi be closed.
