Freedmen’s Town is one of the most endangered wards in the United States. It is one of the rarest and unique because it was founded and built by previously enslaved families and their descendants immediate after emancipation in 1865.
Please protect our heritage and our history for our grandchildren and many more generations to come.
Dear Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee,
Students of CVHS (Carnegie Vanguard High School), residents, and friends of the National Register Historic District of Freedmen’s Town request your immediate assistance to:
1. Stop further demolition and displacement of National Register houses.
2. Stop the removal of the historic brick streets and instead to install utilities under sidewalk easement using 21st century technology.
3. Seek funding from the Department of the Interior and any other agencies for historic preservation and operation of the endangered district as a national tourist destination.
