Since 2002 the provincial government of British Columbia has pursued an energy policy that cripples our public power asset BC Hydro.
In the 'Energy Plan' of 2002 the government has signed secret deals with campaign donors to allow them to set up private power generation facilities and force BC Hydro to buy their power via secret contract for more than what the power is worth, in some cases for more than what it can be sold for. This has turned BC Hydro from a profitable public asset into Crown Corporation on the brink of bankruptcy.
If we do not mobilize the BC citizenry against this assault on our assets, the theft from our collective wealth will be complete with the loss of not just money, but the dams and transmission lines themselves as BC Hydro collapses under the weight of debt obligation to private interests.
These very same private interests will gain the assets for pennies on the pound as the people of BC beg to have the lights turned on again after just being robbed.
We, the undersigned, request the BC government repeal their privatization of BC Hydro agenda, and, make public the secret contracts signed between the provincial government and the Independent Power Producers that force BC Hydro to purchase power from said IPP's.
Also, we demand the provincial government repeal the moratorium on BC Hydro that prevents it from developing alternative energy sources.
