In 2010 the (former) Auckland City Council purchased the sites at 24-26 Racecourse Parade from Suburbs Rugby Football Club for the purpose of town centre development. In April 2014 Auckland Council’s Governing Body took a vote on whether to keep these sites as public assets or dispose of them and make them available for private sale.

Avondale Community Action understands that the Whau Local Board unanimously opposed the disposal of these sites pending consideration of the service needs for Avondale's town centre development.

The Whau Local Board has been in conversation with the Avondale Jockey Club, Housing New Zealand and the private owners of the currently derelict sites on the Great North Road frontage, known locally as “the old 3 Guys” to vision the best possible Avondale town centre redevelopment. This conversation has proved difficult to date given the various stakeholders’ different agendas.

Negotiating the regeneration of our town centre is likely to be further complicated if an additional private stakeholder were added to the mix.

As an Avondale resident I share Avondale Community Action’s concerns, as expressed in their letter to Mayor Len Brown and the Auckland Council Finance and Performance Committee dated 26 June 2014. The letter highlights urgent concerns around the process and ultimate decision made in April 2014 to approve the sale of 24-26 Racecourse Parade for housing development.

As an Avondale resident I strongly support the opportunities identified by Avondale Community Action in the letter referred to above and I also ask Auckland Council to now:
1). Revoke the decision to dispose of council owned land at 24-26 Racecourse Parade
2). Give precedence to community infrastructure and service provision in Avondale, a historically neglected but much loved neighborhood.
3). We urgently need our community centre replaced.

More than anything, as an Avondale resident I want to be treated as a genuine stakeholder and a valued contributor to the ongoing development of our diverse and dynamic community. I don’t want to be left out of decision making that is shaping the future of Avondale; I want to be included and consulted on all aspects of our town centre development.
