The annual Australia Day Concert and Citizenship Ceremony at Shorncliffe Brisabne has been cut by the Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor in his recent Budget.

It was a shock to see LNP City Hall administration has axed the funding for the popular Australia Day by the Bay held at Upper Moora Park Shorncliffe.

Brisbane City Council has been funding this fantastic local celebration for the past 15 years so Brisbane residents could celebrate Australia Day in the suburbs.

The Australia Day by the Bay event previously provided an afternoon live music and entertainment, welcomed new Australians with a Citizenship Ceremony and this year supported the local Cotton Street Billycart Races to celebrate our country's special day.

The benefit of the Council funding had been maximised by the fact that many local service clubs volunteered their services on the day.

The axing of Council's contribution is a real disappointment to Sandgate Rotary Club, Sandgate Apex, and groups like the Sandgate Redcliffe Gators Cricket Club and Artrageous which have been involved over the years.

Even though Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and his LNP Council Administration have wiped their hands of our Australia Day by the Bay event, local Councillor Victoria Newton and Federal Member for Lilley Wayne Swan are determined to try to ensure we continue to have a quality event on this day in the future.

BRING BACK FUNDING FOR AUSTRALIA DAY BY THE BAY

For the past 15 years, the Brisbane City Council has funded Australia Day celebrations at Shorncliffe to hold events in the suburbs, not just the inner-City.

Australia Day by the Bay has successfully showcased a diversity of performers and activities, welcomed new Australians with a Citizenship Ceremony, and in 2012 helped support the Tosser Turner Cup Billycart Races.

With the closure of the Shorncliffe Pier for repairs, it's more important than ever for Council to support events to attract people to the local area.

After 15 years of holding an event with community partners including Music by the Sea, Sandgate Rotary, Sandgate Apex, Artrageous Community Arts and the Sandgate/ Redcliffe Cricket Club funding has been cut only months before the event.

We the undersigned call on the Lord Mayor to reverse his decision to cut the funding, and reinstate the Australia Day by the Bay funding to enable the 2013 event to go ahead.
