Help Save A Beautiful Piece of High River History

A 111 year old home in High River is losing the race against time and if it does not receive heritage designation from the Town, it will have to be demolished. Recent rains have damaged the home’s foundation and it is in danger of crumbling altogether. A heritage designation from the Town of High River would allow us to apply for provincial funding to save the property – without it, the property will have to be torn down.

The home was built in 1904 by the town’s first lawyer, J.E. Varley, who was one of High River’s most prominent citizens. It was converted to a hospital in 1909, the Second Cottage Hospital in town. It served as such until 1923, surviving the bleak period of the Spanish Influenza of 1918-19, when overflowing capacity had the nurses sleeping on the porch with only hot water bottles for heat. Since then it has changed hands several times, suffered through two devastating fires and most recently, the June 2013 floods.

We, the undersigned, call on the Town of High River to designate the property at 36 2 Avenue SE in High River as a heritage home.
